14화 오늘 무슨 날이에요

퇴근 무렵이었다.

다른 사람들이 하나둘 빠져나가고, 사무실이 조용해질 즈음 은호가 태경의 자리로 갔다.

"대리님."

태경이 고개를 들었다. 오후 내내 그랬듯 표정이 없었다.

은호는 잠시 망설이다 물었다. "오늘… 무슨 날이에요?"

태경이 흠칫했다.

부정하려는 듯 입을 열었다가, 문득 은호의 눈을 봤다. 두 달 동안 아무것도 묻지 않고 곁에 있어준 사람이었다. 커피를 놓고 가면서도 왜냐고 묻지 않았고, 소매 얘기를 두 번 다시 꺼내지 않았고, 오늘 아침 티브이 앞에서도 아무 말 하지 않았던 사람.

한참의 침묵 끝에, 태경이 짧게 답했다.

"…내일이 기일이에요."

그 말을 끝으로 창밖이 어두워지더니, 늦가을답지 않게 굵은 비가 쏟아지기 시작했다.

It was near the end of the day.

As people left one by one and the office grew quiet, Eunho walked over to Taekyung's desk.

"Taekyung."

He looked up. His face was as blank as it had been all afternoon.

Eunho hesitated, then asked. "Is today… something?"

Taekyung flinched.

He opened his mouth as if to deny it, then looked into Eunho's eyes. This was the person who had stayed beside him for two months without asking anything. Who left coffee without explaining why. Who never brought up the sleeves again. Who had said nothing this morning in front of the television.

After a long silence, Taekyung answered briefly.

"…Tomorrow is the anniversary."

As the words left him, the sky outside darkened, and heavy rain began to fall — unusual for late autumn.
