15화 빗속에서

우산을 챙긴 사람은 아무도 없었다.

두 사람은 건물 처마 밑으로 몸을 피했다. 굵은 빗줄기가 아스팔트를 두드리는 소리가 유난히 크게 들렸다. 여름 내내, 그리고 가을 내내 팽팽하게 조여 있던 공기가, 그 빗소리에 조금씩 풀리는 것 같았다.

한참 말없이 비를 보던 태경이, 먼저 입을 열었다.

"혹시… 시간 되면 잠깐 같이 있어줄 수 있어요."

드문 부탁이었다. 은호는 두말없이 고개를 끄덕였다.

두 사람이 향한 곳은 회사 옥상이었다. 비가 그치지 않아 처마 아래 좁은 자리에 나란히 섰다. 태경은 한참을 그렇게 비 오는 하늘만 바라봤다. 은호도 굳이 먼저 말을 걸지 않았다.

"…아까 그거요." 이윽고 태경이 입을 열었다. "기일이라고 한 거."

그러곤 다시 말이 끊겼다.

한참의 침묵 끝에, 태경이 짧게 웃었다. "아니에요, 됐어요. 괜히 이상한 얘기 꺼내서 미안해요." 그러곤 몸을 돌려 자리를 뜨려 했다.

은호는 붙잡지 않았다. 다만 조용히 말했다.

"저 그냥 여기 있을게요. 비 그칠 때까지."

태경의 걸음이 멈췄다.

Neither of them had brought an umbrella.

They took shelter under the eaves of the building. The sound of heavy rain hitting the pavement seemed unusually loud. The tension that had held the air tight all summer, and all autumn, felt as though it were slowly loosening.

After watching the rain in silence for a while, Taekyung spoke first.

"If you have time... could you stay with me for a bit?"

It was a rare request. Eunho nodded without asking why.

They went up to the rooftop. Since the rain had not stopped, they stood side by side in the narrow space under the eaves. Taekyung stared at the rainy sky for a long time. Eunho did not try to start a conversation either.

"About what I said earlier," Taekyung finally began. "The anniversary."

Then his words stopped again.

After a long silence, he let out a short laugh. "Never mind. I'm sorry for bringing up something strange." He turned as if to leave.

Eunho did not stop him. He only said quietly,

"I'll just stay here. Until the rain lets up."

Taekyung's steps halted.
