Night, the half-basement room.

Sujin opened her own laptop. The company computer kept a log of everything she did. This work could not leave a trace.

> **[Work Log]**
>
> | No. | Task | Progress |
> |---|---|---|
> | 1 | Build the overseas account opening application form | 40% |
> | 2 | Power of attorney template | 20% |
> | 3 | Get Managing Director Kang Moyeon's signature | 0% |
> | 4 | Transfer approval document | 0% |

Her hand stopped at number three.

Sujin brought up the signature image she had pulled out of the sign-off system.

She zoomed in as far as the screen would go. The pixels blurred together, and each line showed up as one thick lump.

*This is not going to work.*

To **forge** a signature was not just a matter of tracing the shape. Where the hand pressed down, where it let go, which way each **stroke** turned — if any of that was off, an expert would catch it at once.

Sujin tried it about ten times and closed the laptop.

*I have to see the original.*

But the original sign-off documents could not be taken out. They went into the Planning Department cabinet, and that cabinet never left the department.

*At the office, when nobody else is there.*

Now she had a reason to work late.

The next day, the underground parking lot.

Jihoon was leaning against his car, smoking.

"How is it going."

"The signature is not coming out. The scan is useless."

"And?"

"I have to see the original. I will do it at the office, at night."

Jihoon nodded. Then he blew out a long stream of smoke.

"About you, though."

"Yes."

"Word is you have been sticking close to the Managing Director."

Sujin's fingertips went stiff.

*He saw.*

"I am the one in charge of sign-offs."

"And the one in charge of sign-offs goes to her house at midnight for what."

"The Team Lead told me to. The mail is still there."

Sujin answered. There was no **tremor** in her voice.

Jihoon looked at her for a moment. It was about three seconds.

"Fine. That settles that."

"…"

"But, Lee Sujin."

Jihoon ground the cigarette out on the floor.

"Does that woman look pitiful to you."

Sujin did not answer.

"Well, she is pitiful. I admit that much myself."

Jihoon laughed.

"But pity and touching are two different things. Mix them up and someone dies."

"…I do not follow."

"Not you. That woman."

Sujin's eyes wavered, just barely.

"You get soft on her, you shake the table, and what does the Chairman clear away first. You, or that woman."

Jihoon opened the car door and added one more thing.

"That woman. You would just be one Assistant Manager losing your job."

The door shut and the car pulled out.

Sujin stayed where she was.

*That bastard.*

She was angry. And what made her angrier was that the anger came not from the words being wrong, but from them being right.

A week later, the main auditorium of Taesan Group.

A rehearsal was under way ahead of the new business presentation.

As the Planning Department's staffer on duty, Sujin took the job of turning the slides at the back.

President Nam stood on the stage, and Moyeon sat beside him in the attending officer's seat.

*It is not even her presentation, and she still has to dress like that?*

Sujin clicked her tongue inwardly.

Jihoon sat in a seat at the side of the stage. He was swiping through a tablet, checking something. He did not look Sujin's way once.

Near the end of the rehearsal, the coordinator on duty had to step out for something urgent. The collar of Moyeon's jacket had been left crooked.

"Excuse me, your collar…"

Sujin spoke before she thought about it.

"Oh. So it is."

Moyeon reached up and touched it without a mirror, but the angle was off.

"Here, let me. The moment this is on air, everyone will see it."

Sujin stepped closer, half ordering her. Moyeon lowered her arm without a word.

Sujin moved in front of Moyeon and reached out with both hands to straighten the jacket collar.

*This is close.*

It was close enough to hear her breathing. A faint scent came off Moyeon. It was something like lilies, and also like nothing at all.

Sujin kept her eyes fixed on the collar. Lift them even a little and their eyes would meet.

Her fingertips moved along the collar. It was silk. Grip it a little harder, and the cloth would hold a **crease**.

*Even her clothes are this fragile.*

It was the moment she went to fix the brooch on the collar.

Her finger brushed the bare skin inside the collar, near Moyeon's collarbone.

"…"

Sujin's hand stopped.

It was warm.

That was all it was, and that was the problem.

Until now, every time she looked at this woman, she had thought this woman would break. Like glass, like a photograph, like a page out of a magazine. Something you were not supposed to touch.

But when she touched her, it was just the warmth of a person.

*So she was alive, this one.*

That obvious fact shook her in a way she could not explain.

Moyeon did not move either. A short silence settled between them.

"I am sorry."

Sujin said it low and pulled her hands back. Her voice cracked a little more than usual.

*What is this. What is wrong with my hands.*

The feeling stayed on her fingertips. It was not the kind she wanted to wash off, but the kind she would hate to lose.

*Have I lost my mind?*

This close, a faint **flush** had spread across Moyeon's face. Whether it came from the stage lights or from something else, Sujin could not tell.

"It is all right."

Moyeon answered shortly. Her voice was lower than usual.

Sujin finished the rest of it. Her fingertips were careful, but her heart was already beating however it liked.

When it was done, Moyeon turned and looked in the mirror. Everything was in place.

Moyeon said nothing. Instead she looked at Sujin once, in the mirror.

"…That is done."

Sujin forced the words out flatly and stepped back.

She felt eyes on her from the side of the stage.

It was Jihoon.

He had taken his eyes off the tablet and was looking their way. There was nothing on his face.

Sujin pretended not to notice and went back to her place.

*Pity and touching are two different things?*

The words from the parking lot came back to her.

*I know that much.*

She knew it, and still her fingertips would not cool down.

It was a week after the rehearsal. The main auditorium.

President Nam took the podium. Moyeon had built the proposal, and it had gone up for sign-off under her name.

Moyeon sat at the side of the stage.

She said not one word through the whole presentation. She lifted her head and smiled faintly only when the cameras were rolling.

Sujin watched from the back, and then noticed something strange.

*The smile lasts the same amount of time every time.*

It was exactly three seconds. A shutter clicked, her head came up, she smiled for three seconds, and her head went down again. It never slipped once.

*That is trained into her.*

Sujin started working out how many years it would take for three seconds to become instinct, then gave up.

When the presentation ended, applause broke out. President Nam bowed, and the executives shook hands.

Moyeon kept smiling beside them. No one spoke to her.

*For her, even smiling is work.*

Sujin put the slides away and watched her from behind for a long time.

Then she suddenly wondered what her own face looked like, and she checked her reflection in the black monitor.

*…Wake up, Lee Sujin.*

Sujin turned the monitor off.
