English

A month and a half had passed since the presentation.

The Southeast Asia logistics platform project had gone wrong from the very start.

> **[Project Status Report — Q3]**
>
> | Item | Plan | Actual |
> |---|---|---|
> | Setting up the local subsidiary | August | Delayed (October expected) |
> | First disbursement | 12 billion won | 12 billion won (paid out) |
> | Expected recovery | 4 years | Needs recalculation |
> | Assessment | — | Risk of loss |

The local partner changed the terms right before the contract was signed, and in the course of accepting them the company **disburse**d 12 billion won up front. Then the setting up of the local subsidiary fell two months behind.

A call came down from the Chairman's office.

The Planning Department had been buzzing for days.

"Whose fault is this going to be?"

"Is it not obvious? President Nam gave the presentation, but the proposal went up under the Managing Director's name."

"But accepting the change of terms — was that not the President's decision?"

"So what? Do you think that works outside the meeting room?"

Sujin heard that exchange from her own desk.

*It went up under that woman's name. It was not that woman who decided it.*

Sujin remembered the meeting room from before. She remembered the words too — the proposal goes out under your name, President Nam will give the presentation.

*So that woman lends out her name, and the blame is all hers.*

It was two days before the disciplinary meeting.

Sujin was working late when she opened the cabinet without quite meaning to.

Normally it was a cabinet she opened for the forgery work. She had to see the original of Moyeon's signature. But that night she pulled out other papers.

> **[Documents Reviewed]**
>
> | Document | Point to Check |
> |---|---|
> | Strategy meeting minutes, August 3 | Who ordered the review of the change of terms |
> | Internal approval request, August 11 | Final approval line |
> | Correction order e-mail, August 14 | Sender |
> | Disbursement approval, August 20 | Signer |

She matched them one page at a time.

The one who ordered the change of terms to be reviewed was President Nam. The final sign-off on the internal approval request was President Nam's as well. The correction order e-mail of August 14 had gone out from the President's office.

Only one paper carried Moyeon's signature. The disbursement approval of August 20. And even there it sat at the very bottom of the approval line, in the box for attending officers — a **formality**.

*There it is.*

Sujin laid the four pages out in **sequence**, by date.

Four sheets of paper showed the whole of it — where the decision started and where it went. What stayed invisible while the pages lay scattered came into full view once they were set in order.

*All it takes is putting them in the right order.*

It was the work she had done in the back alleys. How to arrange papers so that one person dies and another lives, that was the ground Sujin knew best.

Only, up to now she had used that skill for nothing but killing.

Sujin opened her laptop.

From two in the morning until six, she put together a single document.

> **[Decision Trail — Prepared by Lee Sujin]**
>
> | Date | Matter | Order / Sign-off |
> |---|---|---|
> | August 3 | Order to review the change of terms | President Nam |
> | August 11 | Approval request for the revised plan | Final sign-off by President Nam |
> | August 14 | Correction order | The President's office |
> | August 20 | Disbursement approval | President Nam (attending: Managing Director Kang) |

Attached: copies of the original paper at each step, 12 pages in all.

She set the type in InDesign. The table alignment, the margins, even the footnotes were flawless. It was the same hand she had used in the back alleys to build companies that did not exist.

The one difference was that this time she had not made up a single letter.

*Every page of it real. So this kind of thing exists too.*

The day of the disciplinary meeting.

Sujin stood in front of the meeting room door for a long time.

She knew what would happen if she went in. For an Assistant Manager to carry papers into an executive meeting was one of the things you did not do in a company.

*Then do not do it. What has it got to do with me.*

In eight months she would be out of this company anyway. Until then all she had to do was make papers and stay quiet.

*But.*

A voice came through the door.

"…Managing Director Kang pushed this from the start, so where the **accountability** lies is clear, in my view."

"Managing Director, do you have anything to say."

A silence held for a moment.

"…I do not."

It was Moyeon's voice.

Sujin's hand took hold of the door handle.

*Ah, shit.*

The door opened.

Fifteen or so pairs of eyes turned at once.

"What is this?"

The Team Lead stood up, flustered.

"Assistant Manager Lee Sujin, Planning Department. I have one document for you."

Sujin set the papers down on the table.

"This is the Decision Trail on the project. I have attached copies of the originals as well."

The meeting room went quiet.

President Nam turned one page. Then his hand stopped on the second page.

"…Who told you to do this."

"Nobody told me."

"Then why."

Sujin took a moment to choose her words.

"If this gets written up with the facts wrong, the company will be in worse trouble when an audit comes."

It was a lie. That was not what she had been worried about.

But that was the kind of thing that worked in a meeting room. Even after five years of rolling through the back alleys, she knew which sentence works in which room.

The Chairman took the papers from him.

For a long while nobody spoke.

"…President Nam."

"Yes, Chairman."

"Is this your sign-off."

"That was, the situation was urgent…"

The Chairman closed the file.

"That is enough for today."

Three days later, Sujin was called in by the HR team.

> **[Request for Written Explanation]**
>
> | Item | Content |
> |---|---|
> | Subject | Assistant Manager Lee Sujin |
> | Reason | Attending a meeting above her rank without permission, collecting internal documents without permission |

"Assistant Manager, why did you do that."

The Team Lead asked while he smoked. His face was less angry than unable to understand.

"I am honestly just curious. It is not as if you and the Managing Director are anything special to each other."

"…"

"Honestly, you stayed up all night making that thing, did you not? It helped nobody. And you turned everyone on President Nam's side into your enemies."

"I knew that when I did it."

"You knew?"

The Team Lead let out a dry laugh.

"Assistant Manager, let me tell you what a company is. It is not a place that keeps people from being wronged. It is a place that wrongs them quietly."

Sujin did not answer.

She wrote the written explanation, and on her way out people in the hallway turned to look at her, one after another.

*Well, this much is nothing.*

In the back alleys she had been through far worse than this. Only, back then it had all been to take her own cut.

This time it was not.

*I must have lost my mind.*

And yet, strangely, she did not regret what she had done.

Something changed after that day.

When she went to get a sign-off, Moyeon held her there longer than before.

"Why did you set this number like this?"

"…Would you like me to explain?"

"Yes."

Conversations began that stretched out thirty minutes at a time. At first it was work, and later it was anything at all.

> **[Sign-off Record — September to October]**

One time Moyeon brought out coffee.

"Have some."

"Let me do that."

"This is my place."

Sujin took it without a word and drank. It was the first coffee anyone had made for her since she came to Taesan.

After that it was Sujin who made the two cups first. Somewhere along the way she had come to know where the kitchen was, and which shelf held the cups.

"You have gotten used to this."

"…I am sorry."

"No, I mean it is good."

Neither of them ever brought up the meeting room from that day.

Sujin had no wish to make a show of it, and Moyeon did not know how to say thank you.

Instead Moyeon began to let the sign-off papers sit for a day or two. Handling them all at once meant she could keep Sujin there that much longer.

Sujin noticed it, but she said nothing.

That night, heavy rain was coming down outside the window.

Sujin headed for the penthouse to deliver the sign-off papers.

The marriage meeting the Chairman had called "next month" had already been pushed back once, for reasons on the other family's side. Then, that afternoon, a new date came down. Among the papers there was one document that had come down through the Planning Department.

> **[Internal Document — Marriage Arrangement Notice]**
>
> | Item | Content |
> |---|---|
> | Date of the marriage meeting | Next month |
> | Place | A hotel in Cheongdam-dong (planned) |
> | To prepare in advance | A personal profile, a medical checkup report |
> | In charge | The Chairman's office |

*A profile, and a medical checkup on top of it. All they are doing is sticking two people together, and they make this much paper out of it.*

Sujin clicked her tongue inwardly as she looked at the document. She had heard that the Chairman's office had passed the same thing to Moyeon that afternoon.

The security guard opened the door for her. She was registered to enter for document delivery.

"The Managing Director is inside."

Sujin knocked, but no answer came. She turned the handle and the door was open.

The living room was dark. Moyeon stood in front of the floor-to-ceiling window. The rain ran down the glass.

"Managing Director."

Sujin called her. Moyeon did not turn around.

"Next month I have to smile in front of a person whose face I do not even know."

Her voice had sunk low.

Sujin stepped closer and asked straight out.

"If you hate it, you can just not go."

"It is not that simple a matter."

Moyeon turned around slowly. The skin around her eyes was red. She seemed to have been crying.

"There is no way I am all right."

Moyeon's voice shook.

"Since I was eight my life has not been mine. From the day I came into this house. Who I marry, how I smile, other people decide all of it. I just…"

She could not go on. Her shoulders began to shake.

"That day, in the meeting room."

Moyeon barely got the words out.

"…Someone speaking up for me — that was the first time in twenty-one years."

"…"

"So I could not sleep that night. Because I kept thinking, what do I do if a person like that turns up now."

Sujin hesitated for a moment, then reached out and put an arm roughly around Moyeon's shoulders. It was less a gentle motion than a hard pull. Moyeon did not **resist**. She buried her face in Sujin's chest instead.

The sound of the rain filled the living room. Moyeon cried out loud for the first time. Like a child, as if pouring out everything she had held in, all at once.

Sujin said nothing. She patted Moyeon's back hard instead. Her hand was too rough to be called comfort, but that rough hand put Moyeon at ease more deeply than a gentle one would have.

*If you want to cry, just cry. Nobody is going to say anything.*

It was a line she swallowed and kept inside. Out loud it was too kind, and the kindness of it made her squirm.

*So this woman's fate is pulling me in as well.*

The thought came, and Sujin pushed it away with effort. This was not the time to weigh such things.

The rain showed no sign of stopping. The two of them stood like that for a long while. Only each other's warmth filled that night.
