방청석이 조용해졌다.

모연이 잠시 눈을 감았다가 떴다.
"가족관계가 없는 사람이었습니다."

"일이 잘못돼도 찾을 사람이 없으니까요. 그게 제 기준이었습니다."
수진의 손끝이 무릎 위에서 굳었다.
두 사람은 이미 그 얘기를 했었다. 몇 달 전 거실에서, 모연이 먼저 털어놨다.
그런데 법정에서 다시 듣는 건 달랐다. 이건 기록에 남는 말이었다. 평생 따라다닐 문장이었다.

수진은 그렇게 생각하면서도, 자리에서 일어나지 않았다.
"피고인, 마지막으로 하실 말씀 있습니까."
재판장이 물었다.
모연이 자리에서 일어났다.
"저는 살고 싶어서 사람 하나를 팔았습니다."
목소리가 흔들리지 않았다.
"그 사람은 제가 시키지도 않은 일까지 저를 위해 했습니다. 저는 그걸 알면서도 그날 아침에 손을 뿌리쳤습니다."
방청석에서 웅성거리는 소리가 났다.
"제가 5년 동안 갇혀 있었던 건 사실입니다. 근데 그게 제가 한 일을 없던 걸로 만들지는 않습니다."
모연이 잠시 말을 멈췄다.
"선처를 바라지 않습니다."

Moyeon went with the **counsel** the court appointed. She had no money for a lawyer of her own, and no wish to take one either.
When her lawyer said he would build the case on the five years she had been shut in, Moyeon shook her head.
"That was done to me, and this trial is about what I did."
"Defendant, that would count for a great deal in the term you are given—"
"If it matters, the prosecutor will weigh it without any help from me."
The lawyer let out a long breath.
In the courtroom the prosecutor put a question to her.
"Did you take part in choosing the person who would carry it out?"
"Yes."
"In what way did you take part?"
Moyeon took a moment to pick her words.
"A list of candidates came to me, and I was the one who chose."
"Was there a standard you chose by?"
The public seats went quiet.
Sujin was sitting in the third row.
Moyeon closed her eyes for a moment and opened them again.
"It had to be someone with no family."
"..."
"If it went wrong, there would be no one to come looking. That was my standard."
Sujin's fingertips went stiff on her knees.
The two of them had been over this already. Months earlier, in the living room, Moyeon had brought it up herself.
But hearing it again in a courtroom was another thing. These were words which the record would keep. It was a line that would follow her for the rest of her life.
*She does not have to say that.*
Even thinking that, Sujin did not rise from her seat.
"Defendant, is there anything you wish to say last?"
The presiding judge asked her.
Moyeon rose from her seat.
"I sold one person out because I wanted to live."
There was no shake in her voice this time.
"That person did things for me that I had never even asked for. I knew it, and on that morning I still shook her hand off."
A murmur went up from the public seats.
"It is true that I was shut in for five years. But that does not wipe out what I did."
Moyeon stopped for a moment.
"I am not asking for any **leniency**."

There was the sound of handcuffs being put on.
As she was led away into **custody**, Moyeon looked back once toward the public seats.
Her eyes met Sujin's.
Moyeon moved her mouth, very briefly. No sound came out of it.
*I am sorry.*
Sujin read the shape of it.
And for the first time, she gave Moyeon a nod.

In the retrial court the judge put a question to her.

Sujin rose from her seat.
"It is true that I forged the papers. That part is my own fault."
She stopped for a moment, and then went on.
"But it was not worth seven years. I was made to carry what I had not done on top of it."

"I want to answer for what I did, and for nothing beyond that."
The judgment was read out, and as she was leaving the courtroom the lawyer the court had given her came after her in the corridor.
"You should put in for the **compensation**. Two years over the term comes to a fair sum of money."
"Can that be used for somebody else's retrial?"
The lawyer blinked at her.
"...The money comes into your own account. What you do with it is up to you."
"Then I will put in for it."
Sujin's answer was a short one.
"There is someone called Han Dogyeong. She looked after me while I was inside."

The board of directors offered Sujin the chief executive post.
Sujin turned it down.
"I have a criminal record. What happens to the name of this company if you seat me at the top?"
"We are prepared to carry that."
"No need."
Sujin pushed the papers away from her.
"And I do not much care for this company anyway."
A stir went through the board of directors.
"I will clear out my holding. In exchange there are conditions."
