집을 나서기 전, 두 사람은 현관에서 마주 섰다.

"오늘 나가지 마요."

수진이 말했다.

"왜요."

"압수수색 들어갔으니 이제 다 알 거예요. 강모연 씨 살아 있는 것도요. 위험해요."

모연이 고개를 저었다.

"저도 갈 거예요."

"강모연 씨."

"각서 나오면 저도 조사받아야 되잖아요. 도망 안 가요."

수진은 그 얼굴을 잠시 봤다.

5년 전 공항에서 손을 뿌리치던 얼굴과, 지금 이 얼굴이 겹쳤다.

"……알겠어요. 대신 제 뒤에 있어요."

대강당은 가득 차 있었다.

단상에 회장과 임원진이 앉았다. 지훈도 그 자리에 있었다. 얼굴이 며칠 사이 눈에 띄게 상해 있었다.

지훈은 어제 이사회에 주총 연기를 요청했다가 부결당했다. 압수수색이 들어간 직후라, 오히려 아무도 그 손을 잡아주지 않았다.

수진은 앞줄에 앉았다. 리셋파트너스 대표 자격이었다.

의장이 개회를 선언했다.

"1호 안건, 사외이사 2인 선임 건입니다."

수진이 자리에서 일어났다.

"주주 여러분."

마이크를 잡은 손이 흔들리지 않았다.

"저는 5년 전 이 회사 기획실 대리였습니다. 그리고 사문서위조와 횡령으로 5년을 살고 나왔습니다."

장내가 조용해졌다.

"그 사건, 기억하시는 분들 계실 겁니다. 회사는 개인 일탈이라고 발표했죠."

수진이 뒤를 돌아 지훈을 봤다.

"저 혼자 한 게 아닙니다."

수진이 손을 들자, 뒤쪽 대형 스크린에 화면이 떴다.

"그건 제가 말씀드리겠습니다."

뒤에서 목소리가 들렸다.

장내가 일제히 돌아봤다.

지훈이 자리에서 벌떡 일어났다.

"저 사람 지금 피의자야! 여기 들어올 자격이……!"

"주주입니다."

의장이 서류를 확인하고 말했다.

"강모연 씨, 이 회사 지분 0.3% 보유하고 계십니다."

지훈이 굳었다.

모연이 통로를 걸어 나왔다.

5년 만에 태산그룹 사람들 앞에 선 순간이었다.

*수군거리는 소리.*

살아 있었다는 것에 놀라는 소리, 몰골에 놀라는 소리가 뒤섞였다.

다리가 아직 불안정했지만, 부축 없이 걸었다.

단상 앞에 서서 마이크를 잡았다.

"강모연입니다."

목소리가 떨렸다. 하지만 멈추지 않았다.

"사흘 전에 검찰에 자수했습니다. 지금 피의자 신분입니다."

장내가 조용해졌다.

"5년 전, 저는 저 사람과 함께 이 회사 돈 500억을 빼돌렸습니다."

모연이 지훈 쪽을 가리켰다.

"제 명의 계좌를 쓰기로 한 것도, 서류 만들 사람을 따로 구하기로 한 것도 합의된 내용이었습니다. 그리고 그 죄를 이수진 씨 한 사람에게 전부 씌웠습니다."

수진은 앞줄에 앉아 그 뒷모습을 봤다.

*지금 저 사람, 자기 목에 칼 대고 있는 거잖아.*

여기서 입을 다물면 모연은 5년 감금 피해자로만 남을 수 있었다. 아무도 각서의 존재를 몰랐고, 자수하지 않았다면 수사가 여기까지 오지도 않았다.

그런데 스스로 걸어 나와서, 자기 형량을 스스로 올리고 있었다.

*저러면 실형인데.*

수진은 무릎 위에 놓인 손을 꽉 쥐었다.

"그리고 저 사람은—"

모연이 잠시 말을 멈췄다.

"5년 동안 저를 가둬놨습니다. 창문 없는 방에요."

장내가 완전히 뒤집혔다.

의장이 폐회를 선언하는 순간, 대강당 뒤쪽 문이 열렸다.

검찰 수사관들이었다.

"본부장님, 잠시 동행하시겠습니다."

지훈이 자리에서 움직이지 않았다.

수진이 그 앞에 섰다.

5년 전, 지하실에서 자신을 내려다보며 웃던 얼굴이었다.

"5년 전에 하신 말씀, 아직 기억합니다."

수진이 낮게 말했다.

"너 같은 인재를 이 구질구질한 지하실에서 썩히기엔, 대한민국 자본주의가 너무 아깝지 않냐. 그러셨죠."

"……."

"맞는 말이었어요. 근데 본부장님은 아니네요."

수진이 옆으로 비켜섰다.

수사관들이 지훈의 팔을 잡았다.

Three days before the general meeting, Moyeon presented herself at the prosecutors' office.

It took the prosecutors two days to get the warrant. The originals came out of the safe in Jihoon's office, just as they were.

Before they left the house, the two of them stood facing each other at the front door.

"Do not go out today."

Sujin said it at the door.

"Why."

"The **seizure** has gone in, so they will know everything now. That you are alive, as well. It is dangerous."

Moyeon shook her head.

"I am going as well."

"Kang Moyeon."

"Once the written undertaking comes out, I have to be questioned too. I am not running."

Sujin looked at that face for a moment.

The face which had shaken off her hand at the airport five years ago lay over the one in front of her now.

"...All right. But stay behind me."

The great hall was full.

The chairman and the executives took their places on the platform. Jihoon was among them. His face had gone visibly worse over the last few days.

The day before, Jihoon had asked the board of directors to put the general meeting off, and the request was voted down. It came right after the seizure went in, so not one of them would take his hand.

Sujin sat in the front row. She was there as the head of Reset Partners.

The presiding officer declared the meeting open.

"Item one. The appointment of two outside directors."

A stir went through the hall.

A thin smile crossed Jihoon's mouth.

Sujin's face did not change. It was the result she had expected.

"Item two. A special audit of the overseas dealings of the last five years."

The presiding officer read the item out.

"If the side that filed it has anything to say, let us hear it now."

Sujin rose from her seat.

"Shareholders."

The hand that held the microphone did not shake.

"Five years ago I was an Assistant Manager in the Planning Department of this company. And I came out after serving five years for forgery of private documents and embezzlement."

The hall went quiet.

"Some of you will remember that case. The company announced it as one person's **misconduct**."

Sujin turned and looked back at Jihoon.

"I did not do it alone."

When Sujin raised her hand, a picture came up on the large screen at the back.

Sujin said it in a level voice.

"Where the fifty billion won that left this company five years ago went — that much can be traced on paper. What the paper does not show is who gave the order."

"I will tell you that part myself."

A voice came from the back of the hall.

The whole room turned at once.

Jihoon shot up from his seat.

"That woman is under investigation right now! She has no standing to be in this room—!"

"She is a shareholder."

The presiding officer checked the papers and spoke.

"Kang Moyeon holds a zero point three percent equity stake in this company."

Jihoon went still where he stood.

Moyeon walked out into the aisle.

It was the first time in five years that she had stood in front of the people of Taesan Group.

*The murmuring.*

Surprise that she was alive and surprise at the state of her ran together in it.

Her legs were still unsteady, but she walked without help.

She stood in front of the platform and took the microphone.

"My name is Kang Moyeon."

Her voice shook. But it did not stop.

"Three days ago I gave myself up to the prosecutors. I am under investigation now."

The hall went quiet again.

"Five years ago, together with that man, I took fifty billion won out of this company."

Moyeon pointed toward Jihoon.

"That my accounts would be used, and that someone would be brought in to make the papers — both were agreed between us. And then we put the whole of that crime on Lee Sujin alone."

Sujin sat in the front row and watched her from behind.

*She is holding a knife to her own throat right now.*

If she had stayed quiet here, Moyeon could have remained only a victim of five years of confinement. No one had known that the written undertaking existed, and without her surrender the investigation would never have come this far.

And yet she had walked out in front of them all and was making her own sentence heavier.

*That will mean prison time.*

Sujin pulled her hands into tight fists on her knees.

"And that man—"

Moyeon stopped for a moment.

"He kept me shut in for five years. In a room with no window."

The hall broke into an **uproar**.

The defending side had fallen apart.

At the moment the presiding officer closed the meeting, the doors at the back of the great hall opened.

It was the prosecutors' investigators.

"Sir, you will be coming with us for a while."

Jihoon did not move from his seat.

Sujin came and stood in front of him.

It was the face that had looked down at her in the basement five years before, smiling.

"I still remember what you said five years ago."

Sujin said it in a low voice.

"Is it not too much of a waste of Korean capitalism to let talent like you rot in a shabby basement like this. That is what you said."

"..."

"It was a true thing to say. But it does not hold for you."

Sujin stepped aside.

The investigators took Jihoon by the arms.
