Clearing out the holding took half a year.

The forty-eight billion had been money taken out of Taesan in the first place. Sujin declared the whole of that part and handed it over to the state.

Shares in a company under a special audit did not sell well. A little hope about the new way the group would be run pushed the price up. Even that fell back as soon as the blocks came onto the market.

What was left of the **proceeds** did not come to much.

*Well, this will do.*

Sujin went to see her every other week.

It was a seat that faced her across a pane of glass. For the first few visits neither of them had much to say.

"Are you eating?"

"I eat."

"Are you sleeping?"

"...I sleep a little."

That kind of talk was the whole of it.

On the sixth visit, Moyeon was the one who asked first.

"Why do you keep coming?"

"Because there is no one else to come."

Sujin answered in few words.

"And besides that?"

"...There is none."

Moyeon smiled faintly.

"You have gotten better at lying."

Han Dogyeong won an **acquittal** at his retrial.

The evidence Jihoon had **fabricated** came out of the seizure just as it was, and with Taesan's backing on top of that the result came quickly.

On the day he walked out, Sujin waited in front of the prison.

It was nine years since he had gone in. He had served almost the whole term. It was not that he had been let off three years; it was that he had served nine of them for nothing he had done.

His face had worn down badly.

"So you came."

"The thing you asked for is done."

Sujin said.

Dogyeong looked at her for a moment.

"Is he out of that chair now?"

"He is in custody. Twelve years at the first trial."

Dogyeong nodded. Nothing much moved in his face.

Then, a moment later, he let out a short breath.

"...I see."

For an answer he had waited nine years for, it was a quiet one.

"What will you do now?"

Sujin asked.

"I am not sure. My licenses are all gone as well."

Dogyeong looked up at the sky once.

"They say my daughter turned twenty this year, and I have not seen her face. I will start with that."

Sujin said nothing. Instead she held out an envelope she had brought with her.

"What is this?"

"Your share."

It was half of the three billion that was left.

"I cannot take this. Money is coming to me from the state as well."

"That is that, and this is this."

Sujin said it short.

"I did not do it on my own."

Sujin said it short.

"And if I keep all of this, I turn into the same person I was five years ago."

The same month, in the lobby of Taesan Holdings.

It was two months before Moyeon would finish her term. Sujin had stopped by head office to hand over the last of the papers on the holding.

In the lobby she ran into the chairman.

It was the first time she had seen him since he stepped back from running the group. The investigation into his **breach** of trust was still going. The coldness he used to carry was not there any more.

The chairman knew her at once.

"So it is you—"

Sujin stood in front of him for a moment.

There was a great deal she could have said. This was the man who had taken Moyeon in at eight and raised her as goods until she was twenty-nine. This was the man who told her, when she cried at eighteen, that crying was the one thing she was good for in that house.

But standing there in front of him, she did not want to say any of it.

Sujin walked past him without so much as a nod of the head.

Behind her the chairman called out something, but she did not look back.

Moyeon served two years and came out on parole.

In front of the prison, Sujin was waiting.

"...Why did you come?"

"To take you home."

Sujin answered.

"Is there anywhere for me to go?"

"That is exactly why I came."

Moyeon smiled faintly. Then she walked out slowly.

It was not like the day five years ago when she was carried out of Gapyeong. This time she needed no arm to lean on.

That evening the two of them sat in the living room.

"So what will you do now?"

Moyeon asked.

"I am not sure."

Sujin looked out of the window.

"And you?"

"Me..."

Moyeon thought for a moment.

"I do not know yet."

Eight years had gone by since she last looked ahead with no arranged marriage, no watching eyes, no basement and no prison in the way.

"But there is one thing I do know."

"What is it?"

"From now on my life is mine to settle."

Sujin turned her head.

Moyeon was looking out of the window.

"Eight years ago I said this to you. That my life was not my own."

"...I remember."

"I am not going to say that again."

"Kang Moyeon."

"Yes."

"I have not forgiven all of it yet."

Sujin said it plainly.

"I know."

"It may be that I never will."

"I know that as well."

Moyeon nodded.

"...But."

Sujin stopped for a moment.

"But when you are not beside me, something is off."

Moyeon raised her head.

"I did not rig this table on my own."

"..."

"It was a table we rigged in two weeks and turned over."

Sujin laughed shortly.

"If I had rigged it alone, it would have fallen apart long ago."

Tears gathered in Moyeon's eyes. It had been a long time since tears had come out properly.

"Do not cry."

Sujin reached out and wiped the corners of her eyes.

"Because this time it really is all over."

That night they did not turn the lights off.

On that night eight years before, every lamp in the living room had gone out. It had to be dark. It was a night on which they were not to see each other properly.

This time they turned them off, and Sujin turned them back on.

"Why?"

"Because I want to see you."

Perhaps embarrassed at herself for saying it, Sujin gave a short cough.

Moyeon looked at that face.

It was a face she had not seen eight years before. Back then this person had moved only carefully, in the dark, and Moyeon had kept her own eyes shut. Shut eyes were the only way crying did not show.

When Sujin's hand touched her, Moyeon went stiff without meaning to.

*Ah.*

It was a familiar reaction. It was a thing she had learned in that house. When a hand comes, first go stiff, then work out what it wants.

Noticing that, Sujin stopped her hand.

"Say so if you do not want this."

"...No."

"I mean it. We do not have to do anything you do not want."

For a moment Moyeon could not answer that at all.

In twenty-nine years of living, no one had ever given her that sentence.

That she could say so if she did not want it. That nothing had to be forced.

*So that is allowed now too.*

Moyeon took Sujin's hand and laid it back beside her own face.

"I do want it."

It was slow. All of it.

The night eight years before had been hurried, like people driven to the edge of a cliff. This time filled up slowly, the way a thick tide comes in.

Sujin's hand ran over Moyeon's skin with great care.

One place at a time, as if writing over a memory.

Each time her fingers passed between the back of Moyeon's neck and her collarbone, the cool air turned into warm skin.

Sujin's hand opened the buttons of Moyeon's shirt one by one, very slowly.

Each time a button came undone, the sound of air meeting skin broke the **hush**.

Moyeon held her breath and took that touch in whole.

Under the lights of the great hall eight years before, Sujin's cracked voice pulling her hand away with an apology came back in Moyeon's ear like something imagined.

Sujin's fingertips stopped on the thin skin inside Moyeon's forearm.

The scars were there, from five years of cutting a name into a wall until she was scratching at her own flesh.

When Moyeon pulled her arm back by instinct, Sujin took hold of that wrist, warmly and firmly.

"...Do not look at them."

Instead of answering, Sujin bent her head and kissed low over those marks.

The rough feel of the scars against her lips pulled every nerve in Moyeon's body tight.

Sujin's lips moved along the scars very slowly, printing her own warmth into the hurt places.

"These came from cutting my name in, did they not."

"..."

"Then they are mine."

When Sujin's arm went round Moyeon's waist, there was no space left between them.

Each heartbeat carried straight through to the other, rib to rib.

Moyeon gripped Sujin's shoulder hard.

Their breathing tangled together and the air in the room grew thicker.

Sujin's hand ran down Moyeon's bent back and swept a long line along the curve of a waist that had been pulled tight with tension.

With a short sound in her throat, Moyeon tipped her head back.

Sujin did not stop, and went on into the inside of Moyeon's thigh, slow and unrelenting.

Heat rose wherever skin met, and they drank in each other's warmth as if to fill up eight years of it.

Shaking at a feeling that mixed pleasure with pain, Moyeon pushed into Sujin's hair.

Sujin's touch was firm and sorry at once, and Moyeon's body went red wherever it reached.

Their legs tangled, and the sound of skin against skin ran low through the quiet penthouse.

Moyeon would push at Sujin's shoulder, and then pull her back hard toward herself.

For as long as this moment lasted, each was the only rescue the other had.

Sweat-wet hair stuck to their cheeks, and rough breath broke out between their lips.

Sujin buried her head against Moyeon's chest and went deeper for that heartbeat. Moyeon took that warm weight with her whole body and wiped out eight years of empty time.

The tears came.

This time she did not swallow the sound of them.

It was plainly different from the crying she had held down in her throat eight years before.

This was a time in which crying had been given permission.

Everything Moyeon had pressed down came out of her like water through a broken bank.

"Why are you crying?"

"...Because it is good."

Eight years before, that line had been half a lie; now it came out as the hot truth.

Sujin took the tears running down that cheek away with her lips, not her hand, and took her time over it.

Those lips began at the corner of Moyeon's eye, went by way of her cheek, and came slowly down to her mouth.

Their breath mixed, and short sounds came out between their lips.

As if making sure of each other, the two of them melted a deep and long stretch of time away in each other's arms.

The hard rush of it went down. In the quiet that was left, with only each other's warmth in it, they held each other with no gap at all.

The night was long.

It was long because there was no reason to hurry.

A night gets short when you think there is no tomorrow. You start counting the hours, and once you count them they are gone.

This night they did not count.

They did not have to.

Near dawn, Moyeon woke first.

Sujin was asleep beside her, with one arm thrown over toward her.

Moyeon looked at that face for a while.

At dawn eight years before, this person had woken first as well. She had dressed without a sound, gone out, made a call, and done something all night long.

Back then Moyeon had pretended to be asleep.

*She is not going out this time.*

Moyeon reached out and laid her hand on that arm.

Sujin muttered something in her sleep and pushed in closer toward Moyeon.

*So she is not going anywhere now.*

Moyeon closed her eyes.

And for the first time in eight years, she dropped back to sleep with nothing to help her.

It was the airport.

It was that same airport of eight years before. The same terminal, and much the same time of day.

The two of them stood side by side in front of the departure gate.

Moyeon held her passport in her hand and looked down at it. It was not a forgery. It was a real passport, issued with her own name on it.

"It is strange."

Moyeon said.

"What is?"

"Eight years ago I stood here holding a fake one."

Sujin glanced at the passport.

"That one back then, I made it."

"I know."

"It was a good one, too."

"You could have made this one for me as well."

Moyeon said it as a joke.

Sujin laughed.

"I do not do that sort of thing any more."

The two of them walked toward the departure desks.

This time no one came after them. No investigators, no Jihoon, no chairman.

"Where will we go?"

Moyeon asked.

"Anywhere."

Sujin answered.

"Somewhere nobody knows us."

It was a line the two of them had traded on a dark sea eight years before.

Moyeon remembered that line, and smiled faintly.

The two of them went through the desks.
