"We are short."

Sujin said it while looking down at the table.

"The **shortfall** is 13.2 percent."

"The foreign institutions are still open."

"Those are the hardest. A case on its own will not move them."

Moyeon thought for a moment.

"So what you need is proof."

"Yes. What Jihoon actually did, on paper."

Sujin thought back to the papers from five years ago. The ones that her own hands had made. But every one of them was something she had built herself, not proof that Jihoon had given the order.

"It will be in the safe in his own office."

Moyeon said it.

"What will."

"The side agreement. That man never puts anything that matters into the system. He keeps it on paper only."

It was the evening before that.

Sujin held out a single sheet of paper.

"What is this."

"Shares. Zero point three percent of Taesan."

"...Why?"

"Because you have to be a shareholder to walk into the general meeting."

Sujin said it in the same flat voice.

"I bought them in your name. Whatever you held five years ago would have been **liquidate**d long before now."

Moyeon looked down at the paper for a long while.

"Do you think I am going to that meeting?"

"I have no idea. But you might come to want to."

Sujin gave no explanation beyond that.

"The safe sits behind the bookshelf. I saw it once, five years ago."

"And the password."

"I do not know it. But I know his habits."

Moyeon picked up a pen.

"He builds every password on the same rule. Six digits — the first two are the year, the last four the amount."

"The amount?"

"The amount of the first deal he ever closed. He keeps using it. It is a kind of pride ."

Sujin wrote it down in her notebook.

"And what deal was that."

"I have no idea. He bragged about it to me once, but never the figure..."

Neither of them said anything for a moment.

Then Sujin raised her head.

"We could ask Dogyeong."

Dogyeong sat down on the far side of the glass. It had been a year.

"Have you been well."

"Thanks to you."

Sujin greeted him briefly and went straight to the point.

"His first deal. Do you remember it?"

Dogyeong thought for a moment.

"...If you mean his first deal, that would be before he came to Taesan. There was one he always bragged about closing himself."

"How much was it."

"Not the exact number, I am afraid."

Dogyeong closed his eyes for a moment.

"There would have been a public filing. It was written into his career history as well."

Sujin's hand stopped where it was.

"His career history?"

"It was an attachment to his job application. He pinned it on as proof of what he had done. Personnel will still have it."

Sujin made a call the moment she came out of the visit.

It was Director D on the line. She had handed him a card two weeks before, and three days after that he had called her first.

"Director, I have one favor to ask."

"...Go ahead."

"The hiring file of the Head of the Strategic Planning Division. The attached career material as well, all of it."

The other end of the line went quiet for a moment.

"That is a Personnel file."

"It runs through your sign-off line."

Another silence went by on the line.

"...Before the general meeting, I take it?"

"Yes."

"I will send it."

The line went dead. Sujin looked down at her phone.

*They are falling away, one by one.*

The material arrived that night.

**[D-2, 23:40]**

It was right after the night patrol had gone past the thirty-second floor.

Moyeon came in through the lobby. She was using the same executive **credential** she had carried five years ago.

*It is still alive.*

The system had never been told that she had left.

The company had not forgotten. Jihoon had kept it alive.

Having taken signatures in that name once a month for five years, he could not let the name disappear from the system. It was also kept for the day he would need it again.

*I am walking into his own room on what he left behind.*

Sujin's voice came through the earpiece.

"The elevator camera is replaying old footage for the next three minutes. Go up now."

"Yes."

She came out on the thirty-second floor. The corridor was empty.

Moyeon stood in front of the office door. Her hand was shaking.

"Are you all right?"

Sujin asked through the earpiece.

"...Yes."

It was a lie. Simply being inside this building again after five years made her breath come short.

"If it is too much, come out now. We will find another way."

"No."

Moyeon opened the door.

"This one is mine to do."

She pushed the bookshelf aside and the safe came into view.

> **[Guess at the Password]**
>
> | Digits | Ground | Value |
> |---|---|---|
> | 1-2 | Year the deal closed | 09 |
> | 3-6 | Deal amount (in hundred millions) | 1450 |

It was the number Sujin had found in the Personnel material.

Moyeon turned the dial.

0-9-1-4-5-0.

A red light came on.

"It will not open."

"...Try it again. Slowly."

A second try. The same result as before.

"If it is wrong three times, an alarm goes off."

There was a shake in Moyeon's voice.

Sujin spoke quickly through the earpiece.

"Wait. On that deal, the figure in the filing and the figure in the actual contract may not be the same."

"How do we check that?"

"What was the number written on his sheet."

"One hundred forty-five billion."

"But the filing says..."

There was the sound of Sujin turning pages.

"One hundred forty-eight billion. A **discrepancy** of three billion."

*He wrote it down smaller on his own sheet.*

Sujin said it in a low voice.

"He is the sort who makes his own numbers bigger than they were. So why write this one down smaller?"

"..."

"Because he cannot explain where the three billion went."

Moyeon's fingertips stopped where they were.

"Then the password is."

"Try the real amount. The number only he knows is the true one."

Moyeon turned the dial.

0-9-1-4-8-0.

A green light came on.

A few document files sat inside the safe.

Moyeon opened them one at a time.

> **[What Was in the Safe]**
>
> | No. | Document | Point |
> |---|---|---|
> | 1 | Side agreement (five years ago) | Instruction to carry out the fifty billion won transfer, signed by Jihoon |
> | 2 | Written undertaking | Advance consent to the use of Kang Moyeon's name |
> | 3 | Name list | Staff under management and what each of them was paid |
> | 4 | Memo | Personal material on the chairman's family |

"Just photograph them. Leave the originals where they are."

Sujin spoke through the earpiece.

"Why?"

"If you take them, that is theft. A court will not take it as evidence later."

Sujin's voice left no room for argument.

"The photographs are all we need. With them the prosecutors can get a **warrant** and seize the originals themselves, and that is clean evidence."

*So this is what five years teaches you.*

Moyeon took out her phone and photographed them one at a time.

Then, at the second one, her hand stopped.

Her own signature was on it. She had written it five years earlier, on the day she stepped onto the table.

*I do not have to shoot this one.*

If this paper went to the prosecutors, she would be exposed as an accomplice too.

The moment that thought went through her, Moyeon felt her own skin crawl.

*Again.*

It was the same as five years ago. To live, to get herself out alone.

"Is there anything?"

Sujin's voice came through the earpiece.

Moyeon closed her eyes and opened them again.

"...Four. The side agreement, the written undertaking, the list of names, the memo on the chairman."

"What is the written undertaking."

"The one with my signature on it."

The other end of the line went quiet for a moment.

"...If that comes out, it catches you too."

"I know."

There was the sound of a shutter.

"I have them all."

Moyeon put the papers back into the safe in their original order and pushed the bookshelf into place.
