English

Nine at night, the archive.

Sujin was pacing near the gap in the stacks again.

Today there was no Jihoon, no crisis, not even a document that needed sign-off.

*Why did I even come.*

She had an excuse. She still needed to check the personal information she had failed to note down last time. That much was true — she had not written it down yet, and the account opening application could not be finished without it.

But Sujin had not even gone near that box.

"What paperwork is it today?"

The voice came from behind her. It was Moyeon.

Sujin's shoulders gave a small jolt.

*Did she know I'd come?*

She had never said it out loud. She had not told anyone she was coming here tonight.

"The paperwork…"

Sujin trailed off. She dug through her bag, but there was no paperwork in it, not really.

*Oh, great. I actually came here for no reason at all.*

Sujin was caught off guard for a moment. She cleared her throat to hide it.

"Never mind. I was just passing by."

"Is the second basement floor on the way somewhere?"

"…"

Moyeon looked at her for a moment without saying much. She did not press, and she did not laugh it off either.

"I see."

It was a short answer.

Sujin thought she understood what that "I see" meant, and it only made things more embarrassing.

As the two of them walked deeper into the stacks, talking, they lost track of the time.

A low beep sounded. The ceiling lights went out halfway.

"…What is this?"

Sujin frowned and walked toward the entrance. She turned the door handle, but it would not **budge**.

> **[Automatic Access Control Notice]**

"This place locks itself automatically once the hours are over."

"So we are locked in right now?"

Moyeon's voice trembled slightly.

"Can we not just call the duty officer?"

Moyeon pulled out her phone. But instead of a signal bar, only an X sat at the top of the screen.

"…There is no signal."

"The signal is weak down here on basement two anyway. It was like that from the moment we came in."

Sujin said it without much concern. The archive itself was walled in by layers of steel shelving, and unlike the floors above ground, it barely got any reception at all.

Moyeon's face went white.

"So we are really, truly stuck in here."

"There is a landline in the duty office, but that is inside the General Affairs office too, so we can't get to it from here."

Sujin looked over the control panel beside the door.

What she had touched on the way in was the outer panel. The inside had an entirely different circuit layout. Getting out from the inside had been designed to be far trickier than getting in from the outside.

*Makes sense. The whole point of a place like this is to keep people from getting out.*

"This is going to take a while to fix."

Part of the circuit had aged, and touching it carelessly risked breaking it completely.

"…Then what do we do?"

"Just wait a little. If I rip into it blindly, it will only get more tangled."

In the end, the two of them sat down side by side on the corridor floor.

The archive was cold inside. Time passed awkwardly.

Sujin took off her jacket and held it out to the side.

"Wear this. It is cold here."

"What about you, Assistant Manager?"

"I am fine."

"Liar."

Moyeon laughed briefly and took the jacket.

She put it over her shoulders, and those shoulders disappeared into the jacket.

*Small.*

Sujin watched that for a moment, then looked away.

"Let's talk about something. It is boring."

Moyeon was the one who spoke first.

"About what?"

"About you, Assistant Manager. I have been the only one talking about myself all this time."

Sujin said nothing for a moment.

She was not used to talking about herself to other people. In the back alleys, the ones who talked too much about themselves were the first to get hurt.

*Tell someone something, and it turns into a knife.*

"…There is nothing much to tell."

"Someone with nothing much to tell wouldn't have fingers that fast."

Moyeon shot back with a small laugh.

Sujin looked up at the ceiling for a moment.

*Well, I'm leaving in a few months anyway.*

That was an excuse. The real reason was something else. This woman had spoken about herself first.

"I am twenty-nine."

Sujin said it first.

"…Me too."

Moyeon answered shortly.

"Same age, then."

"So we are."

It was a strange feeling.

Born in the same year, one of them had started drifting from house to house at eight while the other had walked into that penthouse.

"I don't remember my parents' faces well. We parted before I started elementary school."

Sujin went on, matter-of-fact.

"I drifted from house to house, and around middle school I just started living on my own. I did anything that paid. Then people found out I could handle a computer, and that caught the eye of people in this line of work — that is how I ended up here."

"Was it not scary? Living alone like that."

"What is there to be scared of? Being scared just makes you look weaker."

Sujin smiled, bitter.

"But sometimes, really only sometimes."

"…"

"In the middle of eating, it would hit me — once I finish this, I will be alone again. Those were the worst moments."

Moyeon listened to the story without saying a word.

Her expression was slowly stiffening. Sujin could not see it in the dark.

*Don't tell me that.*

She said it inside herself. But it never made it out of her mouth.

A woman locked in a gilded cage, and Sujin, left alone on streets with no one in them. The paths were different, but both had endured the same kind of loneliness.

Moyeon's eyes grew hot.

But it was not only pity. Something else was tightening around her throat. She did not want to know exactly what it was, even from herself.

"So that is why you look after people so well. Other people."

Moyeon said it, low.

"Look after who? They just stay on my mind, that is all."

Sujin shot back, **gruff**.

But despite that tone, she had leaned her body slightly toward Moyeon, sitting beside her.

The two of them sat side by side without speaking for a while. Their shoulders were close enough to almost touch.

A long while later, weight settled onto her shoulder.

Sujin's body went stiff.

Moyeon had rested her head on Sujin's shoulder. There was no telling whether she had fallen asleep or was just leaning there.

Sujin did not move.

*Is she asleep?*

She listened to Moyeon's breathing. It was uneven. That meant she was awake.

*Awake, and still leaning here?*

Once she confirmed that, her heart began to pound strangely.

Sujin kept her eyes fixed straight ahead.

Jihoon's words came back to her. Pity and touching were two different things, he had said. Touch her, and that woman dies first.

*That bastard is right.*

But was she staying still because he was right, or holding on to his words for an excuse to stay still — she could not tell, even in herself.

She had no idea how much time had passed.

Her shoulder started to go numb, and she did not change her position.

A long while later, Sujin stood in front of the control panel again.

When the weight left her shoulder, she felt an odd emptiness.

Her fingers, far steadier than before, went over the circuit again.

"I think this will work now."

She joined two wires, and with a low click, the door opened.

"…What did you just do?"

Moyeon asked, her eyes wide.

"It is nothing. I used to work with things like this."

Sujin answered flatly. It was not a history she was proud of, but right now, of all times, it had come in handy.

The two of them stood side by side in front of the door. Their startled hearts had not yet settled.

"That was really close. We could have been in real trouble."

Moyeon said it, relieved.

"You looked far too shocked for it to be nothing."

Sujin shot back with a short laugh. Only then did Moyeon smile too, faintly.

"Thank you, for that day. What you said, about being careful. And for just now, too."

Moyeon said it, low.

"It wasn't even certain. It was nothing."

Sujin answered gruffly. Something still weighed on her. The warning she had given that day, incomplete as it was, still lingered as an **aftertaste**.

"Certain or not, you are the first person who has ever looked out for me like that."

Moyeon's eyes **wavered**. She looked as if she were fighting back tears.

Instead of answering, Sujin looked at Moyeon out of the corner of her eye.

The shadow the light cast hid half of Moyeon's face. That half a face, strangely, shook something in Sujin.

"Assistant Manager, are you…"

Moyeon started to speak and stopped.

"What?"

"Never mind."

Moyeon shook her head and looked away. Her face looked like she had swallowed some words.

Sujin did not press into that silence. Instead she stood quietly beside her.

The distance between them closed just a little. It was close enough for their fingertips to almost brush.

*If I do anything more here.*

Sujin's hand moved, just a little.

Then it stopped.

*There would really be no going back from that.*

At that thought, Sujin stepped back without meaning to.

Moyeon did not close that distance either. But something like regret **flickered** through her eyes for a moment.

Sujin saw it.

She saw it, and pretended not to.

"I will get going now."

Sujin was the first to gather her things.

"Yes."

Moyeon's answer was short. She did not hold her back, and she did not ask anything more.

Sujin turned to go, and a voice came from behind her.

"Assistant Manager."

"Yes."

"The jacket."

Sujin turned around. Moyeon was holding the jacket out, having taken it off.

"Oh, right."

As she took it, their hands brushed.

It was only for a moment.

Neither of them said anything.

Sujin walked out of the archive, muttering to herself.

*If this is how it was going to go, why did I even come.*

She had walked into a place with no excuse to give, and walked back out having done nothing at all.

She had not written down the information she came for, not this time either.

She got into the elevator and put the jacket on, and a faint scent reached her.

Sujin froze in place for a moment.

*Fuck.*

Then she did not take the jacket off.
