|---|---|
| 실행일 | D-Day (3일 후) |

English

It was the day after the first snow.

Eight months since she had moved up from the basement into this building. The seasons had turned twice.

Jihoon had gotten in touch. The **execution** date, he said, had been set.

*Three days. It's really coming up now.*

Sujin checked the message and felt her fingertips tighten. If there was anything she could call preparation of her own, it was only that one **vague** warning she had let slip to Moyeon.

*Will that be enough?*

She was not sure. But there was nothing more she could do now.

D-2. Moyeon reached out to her, out of nowhere.

"Let's go see the sea."

"Now? Just like that?"

"Yes, now."

Sujin hesitated for a moment, then said all right. This might, she thought, be the last time the two of them could spend together.

It was late at night, on a beach with no one else around. Only the sound of the waves filled the darkness.

Moyeon took off her shoes and walked across the sand. Sujin followed quietly beside her.

"Once you leave, where do you want to go first?"

Sujin asked.

"Anywhere. Anywhere no one knows me is fine."

Moyeon answered with a smile — a real one, the first Sujin had ever seen from her.

*How many days will that smile last?*

Sujin's chest grew heavy as she watched that smile. Jihoon's cruel words kept flickering through her mind.

The waves rolled in, then rolled back out. Moyeon stopped walking and leaned lightly against Sujin's shoulder.

"Thank you. Really."

"Nothing is over yet."

"Still."

Sujin said nothing and rested her hand gently on top of Moyeon's head. It was a tenderness she had never learned, not in the back alleys and not at the **conglomerate** either.

*Should I just run off with this woman? Forget Jihoon, forget all of it.*

The thought crossed her mind. But at that moment, the figure of five billion won surfaced again. She still had no confidence that she could let that money go completely.

*I'm a coward too, then.*

Sujin smiled bitterly and pushed the thought back down.

The two of them stood like that for a long while. Only the sound of the waves filled the space between them. That night, for the first time, Moyeon smiled with no calculation in it at all.

*Maybe I started rigging this whole table just to see that one look on her face.*

Sujin thought that, and yet she still had not found the **resolve** to overturn the table completely.

Moyeon lifted her head and looked at Sujin. The face that had been resting on Sujin's shoulder was, before either of them noticed, very close.

"Assistant Manager."

"…Yes."

"Let me ask you one thing."

"What is it?"

"Suppose."

Moyeon chose her words for a moment.

"Suppose I had done something bad to you. What would you do?"

Sujin laughed shortly.

"What's that supposed to mean?"

"Just suppose."

"What could you possibly do to me?"

Sujin answered without much weight to it.

Moyeon said nothing to that answer. Instead, she reached out and caught Sujin's collar lightly.

A wave rolled in, big, then pulled back out.

The distance between them narrowed just a little more. Close enough for their breath to touch.

Sujin's eyes dropped for a moment, then rose again.

*No.*

Sujin took a step back.

If she did anything more to this person now, it would become a promise. And she still had no confidence she could keep that promise. She had no confidence she could let go of the five billion, and none that she could **overturn** the table either.

*Don't make her a promise you can't keep.*

"…Let's go in. The night wind is cold."

Sujin took off her jacket and draped it over Moyeon's shoulders.

Moyeon stood there for a moment, holding the jacket with her fingertips.

The hand that had held Sujin's collar slowly let go.
