> | No. | Task | Progress |

She was stuck on number five.
A signature, she could make by hand. A seal was different.
> **[The Problem]**
>
> | Item | Detail |
> |---|---|
> | Needed | Taesan Holdings corporate seal |
> | Kept | Safe in the Chairman's office |
> | Procedure | Logged in the seal-use register, with reason stated |
> | Access | Head of the Chairman's office, the Chairman |
*Ugh, there's really no way around this.*
Sujin put a cigarette to her lips.
Forging the seal itself was possible. She had done it a handful of times in the back alleys. The problem was that a place like Taesan checked seal **impressions** against the original. If a forged impression differed from the one registered at the bank by even 0.1 millimeters, it would get caught.
*So I'd have to stamp the real one.*
To stamp the real one, she would have to open the safe — and opening the safe left a record in the register.
*And a record means it's over.*
Sujin let out a long stream of smoke.
*I can't do this one alone.*
Underground parking lot.
"There's a problem with the seal."
Sujin held out the document as she spoke.
Jihoon looked it over.
"The Chairman's office safe."
"Yes. There's a use register too, so if I stamp it in secret, it will show right away."
"So?"
"You need to give me a way. I'm only an assistant manager — I can't even get up to that floor."
Jihoon looked down at the document for a moment.
Then he gave a short laugh.
"I'll handle that."
"How."
"Don't ask."
Sujin didn't press any further.
*So he has someone inside the Chairman's office.*
It meant the executive in charge of M&A could reach all the way into the Chairman's office. It also meant there was a lot more under this table than she had thought.
"Forget that."
Jihoon said, pulling out a cigarette.
"Let's talk about the execution date."
"Make that forged passport I mentioned before — get moving on it. We're all leaving together on the execution date."
"…What happens to the Managing Director, once she's out?"
Sujin asked, keeping her face carefully blank.
"Of course. What, worried?"
Jihoon lit a cigarette and smirked.
"She's obviously going to be **dead weight**. Why drag her along to the end? Better than leaving a witness behind."
It was a laugh with nothing behind it.
Sujin's fingertips went stiff on top of the folder.
She had heard the same thing on the first day of the contract. Back then, she had let it go in one ear and out the other. The person had been someone whose name and face she didn't even know.
*But now there's a face.*
The sight of her from behind, standing at the window and looking out over the night skyline. The hand that turned pages by the light of a single flashlight. The voice that said her mother had told her never to look back. The face that smiled for exactly three seconds at the click of a shutter.
All of that was what would disappear.
"What, why the face."
Jihoon asked.
Sujin fixed her expression.
"It's nothing."
"Lee Sujin."
"Yes."
"What did I tell you before."
Sujin didn't answer.
"That pity and touching are two different things."
Jihoon blew out a stream of cigarette smoke.
"I know exactly what's going through your head right now. But the moment you act on it, that woman dies before I do."
Sujin's eyes wavered.
"If you shake the table, who do you think the Chairman clears out first?"
"…"
"It's not me who kills her. It's you. Don't get that confused."
Jihoon opened the car door and got in.
Sujin stood there for a long time.
*Was that bastard right?*
Sujin went back to the half-basement room and sat down at her laptop.
The forged passport project sat open on the screen. She hadn't even started yet.
In her head, she rigged the table. It was a calculation she had made hundreds of times in the back alleys.
> **[Possible Outcomes]**
>
> | Choice | Result |
> |---|---|
> | Go through with the plan | 5 billion won. That person disappears overseas |
> | Flip the table | Jihoon hands it to the Chairman. That person gets cleared out first |
> | Take her and run | No funds. No identity. Won't get far |
Her hand stopped at the third line.
*No funds.*
Sujin's account held nothing more than a few months of the salary Taesan paid her. Whatever she had earned in the back alleys had already gone toward paying off debt.
She couldn't touch the 50 billion won. The authority to approve transfers belonged to Jihoon.
*What if I take the 5 billion and run with her after?*
Sujin wrote that line out in her head.
But by the time Jihoon handed over the 5 billion, Moyeon would already have been dealt with.
*The order doesn't line up.*
She sat there like that for a long time.
*So what am I supposed to do, then?*
After three cigarettes, Sujin finally started on the passport.
*Just make it for now. If I don't use it, that's fine too.*
She told herself that. She told herself that, knowing full well it was an excuse.
Over the course of several days, Sujin finished the forged passport, exactly as Jihoon had instructed.
She pulled the photo from a personnel record card. It was material she could access with her authority as an assistant manager in the Planning Department. She erased the access log by mixing it in with thirty other employees' records.
The face in the ID photo showed no expression.
*Not smiling here either.*
As Sujin adjusted the photo to fit the passport's specifications, her hands slowed for a reason she couldn't name.
The blank paper was the problem. Passport paper and holograms weren't things she could make herself — she had to get them from a **broker**, one order at a time. Word came back that this job had used up the last of the stock.
*The next shipment will take a while.*
> **[Status Report — to Jihoon]**
>
> | Item | Content |
> |---|---|
> | Passport forgery | Complete |
> | Handed to | Jihoon (held until the execution date) |
> | Seal | Jihoon to handle |
The finished passport went straight to Jihoon. No spare blanks were left.
Once it left Sujin's hands, the passport was no longer hers.
*Still, I can't just let this go without saying something.*
The next evening, Sujin stopped by the penthouse under the **pretext** of sign-off documents.
Moyeon was sitting on the sofa. Her face looked no different from usual.
Sujin set the documents down, hesitated for a long moment, and finally spoke.
"…By any chance."
"Yes?"
"Are you planning on staying at this company long? No, I mean—do you plan on staying here, going forward?"
The question came out clumsy and tangled.
*What am I even supposed to say.*
The sentence turned over in her head, again and again.
*You might be dead in a few months, so run? Does that even make sense?*
*Then what does that make me?*
The moment she said it, exactly what she was would be exposed. And the moment that happened, if Jihoon folded, Moyeon really would be the first one cleared out.
*I can't do it because Jihoon's right. Not because I'm scared.*
Sujin told herself that.
Moyeon's eyes widened slightly as she looked at Sujin.
"Why are you asking that all of a sudden."
"It's just... If something were ever going to go badly wrong here, I thought it might be better to notice it early."
The words kept skating around the point.
"I'm not in a position to tell you exactly what to do. Just... be careful. That's all."
Moyeon said nothing for a moment.
Then she smiled, faintly.
"You really are a strange person, Assistant Manager."
Sujin couldn't read exactly what that smile meant.
"I'll be careful."
It was a short answer.
Sujin, no more certain of anything than before, gave a small bow and turned to leave.
*This is the best I can do.*
She repeated that to herself as she walked out the door.
*Best. Right.*
A **rebuttal** rose up immediately.
*You just can't let go of the 5 billion.*
Sujin pushed the thought away. It wouldn't be pushed away.
As she pressed the elevator button, the three scars on the back of her hand caught her eye.
All her life, she had sold people out with this hand. This wasn't even the first time.
*So why does this one feel so heavy?*
She knew the answer. She just didn't want to put it into words.
