English

Siddhartha and Govinda left the forest behind. For many days they walked toward the town where Gotama the Buddha was said to be staying.

They were still Samanas — thin, half-naked, their skin burned dark by the sun. But now they walked with hope. Somewhere ahead was a man who had found the very thing they had searched for so long. With every mile, Govinda grew more eager. Siddhartha grew more quiet. He wanted to believe. He was not yet sure he could.

At last they reached a great town. Just outside it lay a quiet grove of tall trees, and there the Buddha lived with his monks. A rich man of the town had given him the garden, so that he and his followers would have a place to rest.

The two friends entered the grove in the early morning. Everywhere, monks in yellow robes moved softly among the trees. Some sat still in meditation. Some walked out toward the town, holding their bowls, to beg for the day's meal. They moved without hurry and without noise, as if the whole grove were breathing slowly.

"We are looking for Gotama, the Awakened One," Govinda said to a passing monk. "Which of these is he?"

The monk pointed toward the trees. And Siddhartha knew him at once.

He did not need to be told twice. Among all the monks, one man stood apart — though he did nothing at all to stand out. He wore the same plain robe. He carried the same simple bowl. But peace lay upon him like light on still water.

He walked slowly, his eyes turned down. His face was quiet. His hands were quiet. He did not seem to search for anything, or want anything, or wait for anything. He had already arrived. Every step he took was full of peace. So was every breath, and every finger of his resting hand.

Here was a man who had ended the long thirst. Here, at last, was someone who had found the way home.

Siddhartha saw it too, and his heart bowed low. Yet behind his wonder, quietly, a question was already waiting.

Govinda could not take his eyes off him.
