The seasons turned, and turned again. Siddhartha stayed with the Samanas and grew skilled in all their ways. He could still his heart. He could stand outside his own hunger. He could hold his breath until his mind went quiet. Yet the thirst inside him did not die. It only slept, and woke, and slept again.

One day, as they walked, he spoke to Govinda.

"Govinda," he said. "I do not think we are on the right road. We have learned many things. But are we any closer to peace?"

Govinda was uneasy. "We have learned so much. And there is still more to learn."

"The oldest Samana among us is sixty years old," Siddhartha said. "He has fasted and waited his whole life. And still he has not found the peace he seeks. He is a good man. But even he only escapes himself for a while. Then, like all of us, he comes back."

Govinda had no answer, and they walked on in silence.

Not long after, a word began to pass from village to village. People spoke it with hope in their voices. A man had appeared, they said — a man named Gotama, the Buddha, the Awakened One. He had conquered all suffering. The wheel of pain had stopped turning inside him, and he showed others the way to stop it too.

Siddhartha's heart lifted. "Govinda," he said, "let us go and hear this man."

But when they told the eldest Samana that they meant to leave, his face darkened. He had not given them leave to go. A student did not simply walk away from his teacher.

Then something happened that Govinda would never forget.

Siddhartha stepped close to the old man. He looked into his eyes and held them. He gathered all the strength the Samanas had taught him, and he turned it upon the old man's will. He did not raise his voice. He did not lift a hand. He only looked, and willed, and would not let go.

The old man fell silent. The anger drained from his face. His eyes went soft and distant. Slowly he bowed, and his lips moved, giving them a blessing for the road.

Govinda stared. "You did that," he whispered, "with the very power he taught you."

Siddhartha said nothing. He had won. And somewhere beneath the winning, a small unease stirred in him — but he did not stop to give it a name.

A perfect man was living nearby, they said. And so the two friends turned toward him.
