English

Sera made two asset lists.

The columns were the same. Only the last line **differed**.

> **(A) ASSET LIST**
>
> | Item | Estimated value | Source |
> |---|---|---|
> | Cash | 909 silver gwan | — |
> | 1 warehouse · 3 wagons | 400 silver gwan | Inheritance |
> | 2 preservation chests | 900 silver gwan | **Habel Grote (Rahel License Office)** |
> | **Total** | **2,209 silver gwan**

> **(B) ASSET LIST**
>
> | Item | Estimated value | Source |
> |---|---|---|
> | Cash | 909 silver gwan | — |
> | 1 warehouse · 3 wagons | 400 silver gwan | Inheritance |
> | **Total** | **1,309 silver gwan**

"(A) writes in the name. (B) leaves the chests out," Sera said. "(A) is nine hundred gwan more."

Bern picked up (A).

"You must not file this one."

"Why?"

"This paper goes to Doryun Company. Doryun Company is a full member. A full member files papers it receives with the union when it stands as guarantor. Then the union sees this name."

"What's so bad about that? I want his name on it."

"Your father's name is right beside that name."

Rine looked at (A) again.

Two preservation chests. Source: Habel Grote. **Custodian**: Haran Trading House. Two names sat side by side on one line.

"...So they're tied together."

"They are tied together."

"What if I file (B)?"

"Assets come to one thousand three hundred and nine gwan," Sera said, pushing the abacus. "Debt comes to four thousand two hundred gwan. Debt is three times greater than assets."

"If it's three times, can't I get a guarantee?"

"If I were a full member, I would not stand as guarantor," Sera said. "I would not stand."

Rine set the two sheets side by side.

"Uncle. You said the eldest Doryun son looks at the source field first."

"That is what Cassian Doryun said."

"I don't have a source field at all. Because I cut the boxes row."

"That is so."

"Then what will he think when he looks at me? Will he think I'm a house with few assets, or a house that cut something out?"

Bern looked closely at (B).

"...One warehouse and three wagons, but not a single line of stock. That means the warehouse is empty."

"If the warehouse's empty, why keep it at all?"

"..."

"It shows that something was cut," Rine said, setting (B) down. "If you're going to hide something, you have to hide it well. I'm not good at hiding things."

Rine picked up (A).

"Uncle. Let me check one thing. If I write this in, what happens to my father?"

"He is already dead. He cannot be punished."

"Then what?"

"It stays on record. The union's papers will say Marco Haran, master of Haran Trading House, kept the chief's goods in his warehouse. And it will not be erased."

"What about our house?"

"Keeping the goods is not a violation. There is a deposit receipt for it." Bern chose his words. "But signing a receipt with an empty depositor field is a different matter. That is taken to mean it was left empty on purpose."

"A fine?"

"A **fine**. The amount will be set at review."

Rine folded (A).

"I'll pay it."

"Miss."

"If I don't want what my father did staying on record, I can't name that man." Rine put (B) in the drawer. "And he must already know that."

Bern looked toward the drawer.

"...So that is why he left the depositor field empty."

"Yes."

"Leave it empty, and no one can use it. Not him, and not you either."

"I can use it," Rine said. "Because Uncle Martin told me."

There was a narrow door beside Doryun Company's loading yard.

A **clerk** stood in front of it. Rine held out the papers.

"Please pass this to the eldest Doryun son."

The clerk took them and looked at the first page. He did not turn to the second.

"There is a name in the source field."

"Yes."

"This name belongs to the chief."

"I know."

The clerk looked at Rine. Then he held the papers as they were, without folding them in half.

"I will send this up."

"How long will it take?"

"I do not know. What went up yesterday has not come back down yet either."

Rine stood beside the door. There was no seat.

Cassian came out from the stairs, holding a wooden tag. He slowed his steps at the sight of Rine.

"What did you file?"

"An asset list."

"Did you fill in the source field?"

"I filled it in."

Cassian hung the tag on the wall.

"What did you write?"

"I won't say."

"Why not."

"If I tell you, you'll tell your brother, and then it won't be something I filed as a document anymore."

Cassian said nothing for a moment.

"...Where did you learn that."

"You told me. That your brother only accepts things as documents."

Two hours later, the paper came back down.

The clerk brought it out. It was not sealed.

> **GUARANTEE FOR REINSTATEMENT (2 OF 2)**
> *Drawn up: 12 August*
>
> | Item | Content |
> |---|---|
> | House guaranteed | Haran Trading House (R-2291) |
> | Guarantor | Doryun Company |
> | Signing officer | Raihan Doryun |
> | Scope of guarantee | The reinstatement application as a whole |
> | **Added note** | **During the term of guarantee, all trade by Haran Trading House passes through Doryun Company** |

Rine read the added-note line twice.

"Uncle. What does 'pass through' mean?"

"It means everything we sell, and everything we buy, must go through Doryun Company," Bern said. "We cannot trade directly."

"Do they take a fee?"

"They do. Usually one tenth."

Rine stood holding the paper.

The clerk held out one more sheet. It was a note the size of a palm.

> *I checked the source field.
> This is the first house in ten years to write that name and file it.
> — Raihan*

On the way back, they stopped by the river.

Rine spread the two guarantees side by side. One was Hanan's, the other Doryun's.

"I got both."

"You did."

"Can I file the reinstatement application now?"

"The reinstatement review will not open until the re-examination ends. The papers are now complete."

Rine started to lay the two sheets one over the other, then stopped her hand.

Sera spoke from behind.

"Miss."

"Yes."

"The two contracts **overlap**."

Rine turned around.

Sera pointed to Hanan's guarantee.

"These are the Seid Cloth Guild's terms. It says that all southern blue dye Haran Trading House sources must be sold to Hanan Bek first."

Then she pointed to Doryun's guarantee.

"These are Doryun Company's terms. It says that during the term of guarantee, trade must pass through Doryun Company."

Rine looked back and forth between the two lines.

"...If I sell dye, I have to sell to Uncle Hanan first. And to sell it, I have to go through Doryun Company."

"That is so."

"Then what if Doryun Company won't send it through?"

"Then it cannot go through."

"You mean I can't sell to Uncle Hanan?"

Sera pushed one abacus bead.

"It means breaking a promise."

A cart passed over the river. The wooden bridge creaked once.

Rine folded the two sheets together.

"So I made two different promises to two people."
