English

Sera pinned a sheet of paper to the wall and drew one line on it every morning.

"As of today, it is twenty days," Sera said. "The re-examination began on the twenty-sixth of July. It is twenty days."

"Uncle, didn't you say the longest one you've seen was thirty-three days?"

"That is so," Bern said.

"Then there are thirteen days left."

"Miss. That is only from what I have seen. The rules set no upper limit."

Rine counted the lines on the wall. There were twenty.

"The two guarantees are in the drawer."

"They are."

"And Sera is filling in the ledger, too."

"Eighty-one of the one hundred nineteen columns are filled in. Eighty-one."

"So everything is ready, but the review still will not open."

"It will not open."

Rine looked toward the warehouse door. It stood open, and no one came in.

"If waiting would fix this, I would wait. But this is not something waiting fixes."

In the office, Rine unfolded the re-examination notice again.

> Reason: Filed papers include a document signed after the date of death

"Uncle. It says here, signed after the date of death."

"That is so."

"Which document is that?"

"The deposit receipt. It was drawn up on the twelfth of July, and the master died on the ninth of July."

Rine kept her finger resting on the notice and stayed still.

"Uncle. Where have I heard this before?"

"..."

"The twelfth of July. The collateral agreement Uncle Rendal brought was also dated the twelfth of July."

Bern looked up.

"What did you say back then, Uncle?"

"...I said a signature after the date of death is forgery."

"You also said that if it was reported to the union, the company's standing would be suspended."

"That is so."

Rine slid the notice to the middle of the table.

"Then this deposit receipt is forgery too."

Bern did not answer.

Rine went on.

"Let me get this straight. The deposit receipt has Father's signature on it. It's dated the twelfth of July. Father died on the ninth of July. So Father could not have signed it."

"...That is so."

"Then who wrote it?"

"I do not know."

"You don't know, but you're sure it wasn't Father."

"I am certain."

Rine set the deposit receipt aside.

"Then one more thing follows. If the deposit receipt is fake, we are not the **custodian**."

Bern picked up the deposit receipt.

"...That is so. It means there was never a custody agreement."

"If we are not the custodian, what are those boxes?"

"It means someone else's property is sitting in our warehouse. We have nothing to do with it."

"Then are we out of the re-examination?"

Bern set the deposit receipt down.

"That is what it comes to."

"I will file it."

"Miss."

"I will go to the license office and report that this deposit receipt is forged."

Bern stood up from his seat.

"You are the one who filed that document, Miss."

Rine looked at him.

"On the twenty-fifth of July, you filed the stall certification application, and attached this deposit receipt to it. Sera asked twice, and I told you not to attach it."

"...Yes."

"If you report it now, you are not reporting someone else. You are the one saying that you filed a forged document."

Sera pushed an abacus bead.

"Filing a forged document carries a **fine**. It carries a fine."

"How much?"

"I do not know. It is decided in the review," Bern said. "But if you do not report it, that document stays yours. If you report it, it becomes what you filed."

Rine looked at the two papers side by side. They were the notice and the deposit receipt.

"What happens if I don't?"

"You wait."

"How much?"

"...I do not know."

Rine folded the deposit receipt and put it in her pocket.

"Back in July, Uncle Rendal got caught by me. Because he brought the document himself."

"..."

"I brought mine myself. So it's right that I'm the one who gets caught."

There was no line at the license office window.

Kyle Roude turned from the file box. His collar was still buttoned all the way up.

"Certification is under suspension. There are no documents that can be accepted."

"I came to report something."

"What are you reporting?"

Rine set the deposit receipt on the counter.

"The deposit receipt I filed on the twenty-fifth of July. This is forged."

Kyle looked at the deposit receipt. He did not pick it up.

"State your **grounds**."

"It is dated the twelfth of July. My father died on the ninth of July. A dead man cannot sign."

"That is already written in the reason for the re-examination."

"I know. But the reason only says the papers include something like that. It does not say who filed it, or that it is fake."

Kyle picked up the deposit receipt for the first time.

"Who is the reporting party?"

"Me."

"Who submitted the document being reported?"

"Me."

"..."

"I filed it, and I am the one reporting it."

Kyle took a form out from under the counter.

"The forgery report. Three pages."

Rine took it.

"Before you write, I will tell you this," Kyle said. "Once this report is filed, two things happen together. One, the deposit receipt becomes **void**, and Haran Trading House is removed as custodian. Two, the responsibility for filing a forged document stays with Haran Trading House."

"The fine?"

"The fine."

"How much?"

"I do not decide that."

Rine opened the first page.

"I will write it."

Kyle stood there a moment.

"There is one more thing."

"...Yes?"

"This report will not end with me. A forgery report goes up to the chief."

Rine looked up, pen still in hand.

"Send it up."

"..."

"It's his property anyway, isn't it?"

Kyle's hand dropped from the counter's edge.

Kyle opened the drawer below the window. It was the one with the lock on it.

He took out two papers from inside.

One was the deposit receipt Rine had filed. The other paper had yellowed.

"What is this?"

"A deposit receipt from three years ago."

Rine pulled it closer.

> **Deposit Receipt**
> *Prepared: 3 May (3 years ago)*
>
> | Item | Content |
> |---|---|
> | Custodian | Haran Trading House |
> | Goods | 4 preservation chests |
> | Return condition | Upon the depositor's claim |
> | Depositor | (Not recorded) |
> | Signature | Marco Haran |

"...This one has an empty depositor field, too."

"It is empty."

"Did Father really write this one?"

"He was alive then."

Rine set the two side by side. Four, three years ago. Two, this year.

"Where did you get this?"

"A document received three years ago."

"Then why is it in your drawer?"

Kyle did not close the drawer.

"I received your papers on the twenty-fifth of July, and found this document that same day. I found it and put it here."

"You did not send it up?"

"I did not."

"Why?"

"If it goes up, it disappears."

Rine turned back toward the tag rack.

Wooden tags hung in a row beside the window. Haran Trading House's number was still on two of them.

"We have two tags. Uncle Bern says he has never seen that, not once, in twenty years."

"One is for the stall certification."

"What's the other one?"

Kyle pulled the second tag from the rack and set it on the counter. There was writing on the back.

> *Deposit Receipt Authenticity Inquiry · Applicant: Roude*

Rine read it twice.

"It's your name."

"I filed it on the twenty-fifth of July."

"Then you reported it before I did."

"It is not a report. It is an **inquiry**," Kyle said, and hung the tag back up. "An officer can make an inquiry alone. A report needs a reporting party."

"...So you were waiting for me?"

Kyle did not answer.

Rine wrote her name on the first page of the report.
