English

In the office, Sera spread a new sheet of paper on the table.

"This is the document to submit to Doryun Company. What do we write first?"

"The asset list," Rine said. "We have to show what we have, or they won't guarantee us."

Sera drew lines for the fields. Item, Count, Condition, Estimated value, Source.

"Nine hundred and nine gwan in cash. One warehouse, three wagons."

"Isn't it four wagons?"

"Three. Yona took parts from two of them to build one that runs. The document lists only what can actually roll."

Rine nodded.

Sera's hand stopped.

"Do we write down the two preservation chests?"

Rine did not answer.

"Four hundred fifty gwan for one. Nine hundred gwan for two." Sera pushed an abacus bead. "If we write them down, the assets total one thousand eight hundred nine gwan. If we do not, nine hundred and nine gwan."

"That's twice as much."

"Twice as much."

Bern raised the lamp wick.

"The preservation chests are not ours. We cannot list another person's goods as our assets."

"But our name is on the deposit receipt."

"As the custodian. A custodian is not the owner."

Rine took out the deposit receipt again and set it down.

> Custodian: Haran Trading House
> Depositor: (Not recorded)

"If the depositor field is empty, doesn't that mean there's no owner?"

"It is not that there is no owner. It is that it was not written down."

Sera pointed at one field on the paper with her fingertip.

"The source field."

Rine looked at that field.

"It is empty."

"..."

"Is it right that it is empty?"

Last time, this was where she had let it through. That was why everything had stopped.

This time, Rine said something different.

"No. It isn't empty."

Sera raised her hand. It was the hand that had been touching the abacus.

"Is there something to write?"

"There is."

"What is it?"

Rine looked toward Bern.

"Uncle. Ten days ago I asked Uncle Martin. I asked whose boxes those were. When I asked the third time, he wrote a name on the wall."

Bern took his hand off the lamp.

"...You did not say."

"Because if I said it, it would **implicate** Father."

"What was written then?"

Rine wrote it in pencil in the corner of the paper. She did not say it aloud. It was the same way Martin had done it on the wall.

> *Habel Grote*

Bern looked at the paper. Then he pulled up a chair and sat down. It took time for a man who had been standing to sit.

"Uncle."

"..."

"Who is he?"

"He is the chief of the Rahel license office."

Rine set down the pencil.

"What's a chief?"

"The highest rank in the license office. The officers are under him."

"Uncle Kyle too?"

"Kyle Roude is an officer. Above him is the **chief**."

Rine looked at the name she had written.

"Then let me get this straight."

Bern raised his head.

"There are six crates in our warehouse with a different brand mark, and two of them hold preservation chests. The deposit receipt has Father's signature, and the depositor field is empty. Uncle Martin said the owner of those things is Habel Grote. Habel Grote is the highest person at the Rahel license office."

"...That is so."

"Then Father hid the property of the highest person at the license office in our warehouse."

Bern did not answer.

"Uncle. Why would someone from the license office keep his own property in another person's warehouse?"

"The license office cannot hold property. If the person who certifies also holds the goods, he ends up **certifying** his own goods."

"Then what if he keeps it in someone else's warehouse?"

"It becomes the property of the warehouse owner. On paper, that is how it stands."

Rine turned the paper over.

"There is one more thing."

Rine took three sheets of paper from the drawer and laid them side by side.

"First, the notice of loss of standing. It took effect on the sixteenth of July, but it was written on the fourteenth. It was written two days early."

"That is so."

"Second, the Doryun Company stall lease document. The name Roude was printed in the officer-in-charge field. It was not **handwritten** — it was set in type and printed."

"...That is so."

"Third, the notice of document re-examination. The expected end date is not set."

Rine laid her palm over the three sheets.

"How many people at the license office could have done all three of these?"

Bern looked at the three sheets, one by one.

"...One."

"The one at the top."

"The one at the top."

The office was quiet. Of the three candles, one flickered at the tip of its wick.

"Uncle. All this time, I thought Uncle Rendal was the one pushing against me."

"Rendal Company is a creditor. If you fail, he takes the warehouse. He has a reason."

"But what about the chief? What does he gain if I fail?"

"..."

"His own property is in our warehouse," Rine said. "I put it on paper. On the twenty-fifth of July."

Bern pointed his fingertip at the date on the re-examination notice.

It was the twenty-sixth of July.

"That's the day after I filed it."

At the front of the warehouse, Martin was **coiling** a rope.

Rine stood beside him.

"Uncle. This is the fourth time."

Martin did not stop his hands.

"I've got the name now. I'm going to write it on the document."

"..."

"Before I write it, let me ask one thing. Why couldn't you say it all this time, Uncle?"

Martin set down the rope.

"I told you not to bring up my debt."

"Do you owe him a debt?"

"No."

Rine looked at him.

"Then who do you owe it to?"

Martin looked toward the warehouse door. The inside was dark.

"The master."

"...Father?"

"Ten years ago, my son was sick. The master paid the hospital bills. I told you that before."

"You did. That's why you stayed, you said."

"Yes."

Martin picked up the rope again. He did not coil it, only held it in his hand.

"At that time, our house did not have that much money. I know, because I saw the ledger. But the master brought that money back in three days."

Rine did not move.

"I did not ask where it came from," Martin said. "For ten years, I have not asked."

"So what you were hiding wasn't him, but—"

"That was not me."

"..."

"It was not me," Martin said, setting the rope down on the crate. "But my son lived because of that money."

He went into the warehouse. Rine did not follow him in.

Bern was standing beside the door.

"Uncle. Ten years ago."

"...Yes."

"I thought Father had gone wrong three years ago. When he bought dye as the southern trading house went under."

Bern did not answer.

"Ten years ago, I was three."
