창문 밖으로 바다가 보였다.

착륙 직전, 은호는 아래를 내려다봤다. 배들이 점처럼 떠 있었다. 서울을 떠날 때는 비가 왔는데, 여기는 맑았다.

*오후 두 시 사십 분.*

입국 심사는 생각보다 빨랐다. 짐을 찾고, 카트를 밀고, 출구로 나왔다.

사람이 많았다. 이름을 적은 종이를 든 사람들, 마중 나온 가족들.

그 사이에서 태경이 서 있었다.

셔츠 차림이었다. 여기가 더워서인지, 소매를 팔꿈치까지 걷고 있었다.

은호는 걸음을 멈췄다.

작년 여름, 폭염 특보가 뜬 날에도 손목까지 단추를 채우고 있던 사람이었다. 소매 얘기를 꺼냈다가 처음으로 날카로운 말을 들었던, 그 사람이었다.

태경이 은호를 발견하고 손을 들었다.

은호가 다가갔다.

"…오래 기다리셨어요?"

"삼십 분쯤요."

"반차 쓰셨다면서요."

"네."

두 사람은 잠깐 마주 봤다.

그러다 은호가 물었다.

"덥죠?"

태경이 자기 팔을 한 번 내려다봤다.

"…네. 여기 진짜 더워요."

그게 다였다. 아무도 그 이상 말하지 않았다.

The sea was visible through the window.

Just before landing, Eunho looked down. Ships floated like dots. It had been raining when he left Seoul; here it was clear.

*Two forty in the afternoon.*

Immigration was faster than expected. He collected his bags, pushed the cart, and came out through the exit.

It was crowded. People holding up names on paper, families waiting.

Among them, Taekyung was standing there.

In a shirt. Perhaps because of the heat, his sleeves were rolled to the elbow.

Eunho stopped walking.

Last summer, on the day a heat advisory was issued, this was the man who had kept his cuffs buttoned at the wrist. The man who had spoken sharply to him for the first time when he mentioned the sleeves.

Taekyung spotted him and raised a hand.

Eunho went over.

"…Have you been waiting long?"

"About thirty minutes."

"You said you took a half day."

"I did."

They looked at each other for a moment.

Then Eunho asked,

"Hot, isn't it?"

Taekyung glanced down at his own arm.

"…Yes. It's genuinely hot here."

That was all. Neither said anything more.
