42화 캐비닛

수요일 저녁, 은호는 3층 자료실에 갔다.

시설팀이 물어본 캐비닛을 직접 보고 싶었다. 태경은 아무 답도 하지 않았고, 시설팀은 답을 기다리고 있었다.

낡은 철제 캐비닛이었다. 2016년부터 2019년까지, 라벨이 붙어 있었다.

은호가 서랍을 열어봤다. 종이 서류가 빼곡했다. 전부 디지털로도 남아 있는 것들이었다. 굳이 싱가포르까지 가져갈 이유가 없었다.

그런데 맨 아래 서랍은 열리지 않았다. 잠겨 있었다.

"거기 뭐 해요?"

돌아보니 태경이 문 앞에 서 있었다.

"아, 시설팀에서 물어본 거요. 답이 없으셔서 제가 확인해보려고—"

"거기 그냥 두세요."

목소리가 평소보다 낮았다.

"…네."

태경이 잠깐 그 자리에 서 있다가 말했다. "가져갈 거예요."

"근데 디지털로 다 있는데—"

"압니다." 태경이 짧게 답했다. "그래도 가져갈 거예요."

은호는 더 묻지 않았다.

다만 나오면서, 잠긴 맨 아래 서랍을 한 번 더 봤다.

On Wednesday evening, Eunho went up to the third-floor archive room.

He wanted to see the cabinet Facilities had asked about. Taekyung had not answered, and Facilities was waiting.

It was an old metal cabinet, labeled 2016 to 2019.

Eunho opened a drawer. It was packed with paper records — all of them duplicated digitally. There was no reason to carry them all the way to Singapore.

But the bottom drawer would not open. It was locked.

"What are you doing?"

He turned. Taekyung was standing in the doorway.

"Ah — the thing Facilities asked about. You hadn't answered, so I thought I'd check—"

"Leave it."

His voice was lower than usual.

"…All right."

Taekyung stood there for a moment, then said, "It's going."

"But everything's digital already—"

"I know," he said briefly. "It's still going."

Eunho didn't ask further.

But on his way out, he looked once more at the locked bottom drawer.
