41화 발령

3월 첫째 주 월요일, 인사 발표가 났다.

사내 게시판에 공지가 올라온 건 오전 열 시였다. 은호는 그 시간에 창고 재고 자료를 정리하고 있었다.

옆자리 선배가 먼저 봤다. "야, 났다."

은호가 화면을 열었다.

*신설 싱가포르 지사장 — 이태경 대리*

숨이 잠깐 멎었다. 기쁨이 먼저 왔다. 그다음에 다른 게 왔다.

*싱가포르.*

고개를 들어 태경의 자리를 봤다. 태경은 자기 화면을 보고 있었다. 표정이 없었다. 축하 메시지가 쏟아지는 중일 텐데도, 손이 움직이지 않았다.

점심때 사람들이 몰려가 축하했다. 태경은 짧게 인사했다. 웃긴 웃었는데, 은호는 그 웃음이 눈까지 가지 않는 걸 봤다.

오후에 지안이 지나가며 말했다. "축하해요."

"…감사합니다."

"내가 졌네." 지안이 어깨를 으쓱했다. "근데 태경 씨, 표정이 왜 그래요."

태경은 대답하지 않았다.

On the first Monday of March, the appointment was announced.

The notice went up on the internal board at ten in the morning. Eunho was sorting warehouse inventory data at the time.

His colleague saw it first. "It's out."

Eunho opened the page.

*Singapore Branch Director — Lee Taekyung*

His breath stopped for a moment. Gladness came first. Then something else came after it.

*Singapore.*

He looked up toward Taekyung's desk. Taekyung was looking at his own screen. His face showed nothing. Messages of congratulation had to be pouring in, and his hands were not moving.

At lunch, people gathered to congratulate him. He thanked them briefly. He did smile — but Eunho saw that the smile did not reach his eyes.

In the afternoon, Ms. Kang passed by and said, "Congratulations."

"…Thank you."

"I lost, then." She shrugged. "But why do you look like that?"

Taekyung did not answer.
