Ten at night.
Sujin was still at the office. The revised draft of the new business proposal was behind schedule.

*Typical — the ones who have everything just give the orders, and the ones who have nothing get stuck with every deadline.*
The office stood empty. Only a few fluorescent lights were left on, lighting up the wide space.
Sujin glared at the monitor, then her hands suddenly went still.
*Why am I working this hard on this.*
It was a company she'd be leaving in a few months anyway. Whether the proposal passed or not made no difference to her. And yet here she was, staying until dawn to line up the columns in a table.
*Because it's going out under that woman's name?*
The thought had barely crossed her mind before irritation **flared**.
*No. It's just habit. Doing sloppy work bothers me more than doing it right.*
That was the explanation she gave herself. She chose not to think about how strange it was that she needed one at all.
Just then, her phone buzzed once, short. An email from her team lead.

> | Body | Assistant Manager, I'm sorry to ask, but could you take one more document to the Managing Director's residence? It's urgent, so please handle it today. |
"…Fuck—"
Sujin swallowed the rest of the curse and got up from her seat.
Her movements were rough as she grabbed her tablet. But while she waited for the elevator, she caught her own reflection in the glass and paused, just for a moment.
*What are you smiling for.*
The penthouse door stood slightly open.
Sujin stopped in her tracks.
*Where's the security.*
She looked down the hall. The spot where the guard always stood was empty. She couldn't tell whether it was a shift change or whether he'd simply left his post.
If there was one thing she'd learned in the back alleys, it was that a house with its door left open always has a reason. Most of the time, it wasn't a good one.
Sujin peered through the gap. Only one light was on inside.
"…Managing Director?"
No answer.
Sujin pushed the door the rest of the way open and stepped in. Her hand had already tightened around the tablet case. She was ready to swing it at whatever came at her.
The living room was dark. A single lamp lit the side of the sofa.
Someone was there, beneath it.
Slumped on the floor.
Sujin closed the distance in three steps.
*Conscious.*
She bent her knees to bring their eyes level. Moyeon slowly lifted her head. Her focus **wavered**, but her eyes were open.
*There.*
She caught her wrist. A pulse. Neither fast nor slow.
*Normal.*
She looked at what was in Moyeon's hand. A pill bottle.
Sujin took it and checked the label. A prescription sleep aid. The bottle was about half full.
*Ah. So this is it.*
She'd seen this a few times in the back alleys. Most of the time the bottle was empty, and when it was, there was no time to spare.
This wasn't that.
"Managing Director, can you hear my voice?"
"…It's you, Assistant Manager."
Moyeon smiled — or rather, the corners of her mouth lifted weakly, with no strength behind it.
*She's talking.*
Only then did Sujin let the tension drop from her shoulders.
As she exhaled, she noticed her fingertips were trembling.
*Why am I shaking. Fuck.*
It was the same hand that, a moment ago, had checked a pulse without a flicker of unease. It only started shaking once the danger had passed.
"I'm fine. I take this every day. If I don't…"
Her voice **trailed off**. Her body tilted to the side.
Sujin reflexively reached out and caught Moyeon's shoulder.
*She's light.*
Too light. It felt like there was nothing under her clothes but bone.
*Every day, she said?*
Sujin's expression hardened.
There was no one in this house. The guard stayed outside the door, the housekeeper only came during the day, and Moyeon's family lived in a different building.
It meant that every single night, she took that medicine and collapsed right there, with no one around at all.
*This woman is going to end up in real trouble at this rate. Have the people at this company lost their minds?*
Sujin clenched her jaw.
*No. They know. They know, and they just leave her like this.*
That made her angrier.
"You can stand."
Sujin said it, not as a question but half as an order.
Instead of answering, Moyeon leaned her weight onto Sujin's arm.
Sujin froze for a moment.
This was the first time she had touched this woman's body. Two days ago, she had pulled her own hand off the screen just to avoid so much as brushing fingertips.
And now Sujin had an arm around her back, holding her up.
*It's just the situation.*
She told herself that, and tightened her grip.
As she pulled her up, the full weight settled onto her. It was far lighter than she had expected.
Up close, Moyeon's face was pale. Cold sweat had **beaded** on her bare, makeup-free skin. A few strands of hair were stuck to her forehead.
Sujin tightened the arm holding her up.
She moved slowly toward the sofa. Moyeon's breath was close enough to reach her ear — uneven, shallow breaths.
Just as she was about to lay her down, Moyeon caught Sujin's collar, weakly.
"Don't go."
Her voice was small.
Sujin's body went rigid.
Her eyes fell to the hand gripping her collar. There was no strength in it at all — the kind of hand that would fall away at the slightest movement.
*All I have to do is take her hand off.*
But she couldn't.
"…I'll get you some water."
That was all Sujin managed to say.
Moyeon didn't answer. She lay there with her eyes closed, steadying her breath.
Sujin looked down at her face, quietly.
Something in her chest sank, strangely.
She had seen countless people in the back alleys. People who had been beaten. People on the run. People being sold off. Every single time, Sujin had done exactly one thing: take her share and leave.
That was how you survived long in that world.
*So why am I not leaving now.*
Sujin asked herself. No answer came.
*Let's call it pity. Nothing more than that.*
Sujin drew the line there.
She knew, even as she drew it, that drawing a line meant wanting to cross it. And she knew exactly what had happened to the people in the back alleys who had drawn one.
As she stood to get the water, the hand gripping her collar slipped slowly loose.
It fell **limp** against the floor.
Sujin looked down at that hand for a moment, then walked toward the kitchen.
She glanced back once on the way.
*This table runs a lot deeper than I thought.*
For the first time, she had a feeling this would not end with a single forged document.
And what irritated her more was that the feeling did not seem entirely bad.
