Chan Wai Man.

Lee Sung Ho.

Tan Mei Ling.

English

A basement room, three monitors.

Sujin was sitting this way again, five years on. Only this time the papers were not hers to forge; they were somebody else's forgery, and she was taking it apart.

> **[Shell Companies Identified]**
>
> | Company | Registered in | Set up | Note |
> |---|---|---|---|
> | Orca Holdings | Hong Kong | Six years ago | First point of entry for the funds |
> | Saint River Partners | Singapore | Five years ago | Intermediate transit |
> | Blue Anchor Capital | Cayman Islands | Five years ago | Final custody |

Set against the chart Dogyeong had given her, the three of them lined up exactly.

*He really did copy it whole.*

Jihoon had taken the frame Dogyeong built and used it without laying a finger on it. Only the company names had changed; the shareholding structure and the order the money passed through were the same.

Sujin opened the public **register** entries for each company, one by one.

> **[Orca Holdings — Registered Officers]**
>
> | Position | Name | Nationality | Address |
> |---|---|---|---|
> | Director | Chan Wai Man | Hong Kong | Post office box, Tsim Sha Tsui |
> | Director | Lee Sung Ho | Republic of Korea | Jung-gu, Seoul (struck off) |
> | Auditor | Tan Mei Ling | Singapore | Registered agent's address |

Sujin searched the three names in turn.

Chan Wai Man. One of the most common names in Hong Kong. Thousands of results came back, and not one of them could be pinned to this man.

Lee Sung Ho. The registered address had been struck off. The building had shut its doors five years earlier.

Tan Mei Ling. She was using the registered agent's office address as her own.

*Ghosts, all three.*

Sujin gave a short laugh. It was a familiar trick. It was exactly what she had made a few hundred times over in the back alleys.

Picking a common name, so that the person exists and yet can never be picked out. Borrowing a living person's name for a moment and then wiping the **trail**. Passing the registered agent's address around from one company to the next.

*Then it is obvious who made these ghosts.*

Sujin spread out the material Dogyeong had handed over.

It had been taken down piece by piece over three years inside the prison. Paper and pens were both limited in there, so Dogyeong called out what he could remember and Sujin copied it into her notebook.

> **[What Dogyeong Provided]**
>
> | Item | Content | Accuracy |
> |---|---|---|
> | Identity of the nominees | Three real people | One confirmed dead |
> | Signature samples | Shape only, from memory (approximate) | Incomplete |
> | Registered agent | Office A, Hong Kong | Officer in charge has left |
> | Original incorporation papers | Wording and format | Remembered in part only |

"It was six years ago. There is no guarantee that everything I remember is right."

That was what Dogyeong had said.

"Some of it will be wrong. That part you will have to fill in yourself."

One of the three **nominees** — the real people whose names had been borrowed — had in fact already died. That meant that company could not be touched at all.

This was the decisive part.

Jihoon was the 'owner' of these companies, but he was not the one who had made them. How the papers were put together, what format and wording they used, what shape the signatures took — only the maker knew that.

*With this I can make the papers to swap the directors out.*

To change a director you needed a letter of **resignation** from the sitting director and a resolution appointing the new one. And those papers had to carry the signatures of the sitting directors.

The signatures of people who did not exist.

*A signature for a person who was never there is easier to make than one for a person who is.*

Sujin's fingertips began to move.

A week later.

Sujin was checking the latest filings of the Hong Kong registered agent's office when her hand stopped.

> **[Orca Holdings — Changes on Record]**
>
> | Item | Before | After | When |
> |---|---|---|---|
> | Registered agent | Office A | B Consulting | Two years ago |
> | Verification of the signatory | In writing | In writing plus a video check | Last year |

*It has changed.*

The registered agent had been replaced. Office A, the one Dogyeong knew, had given up the account two years earlier, and another firm was handling it now.

The trouble was the next line down.

**Verification** of the signatory. Until last year it went through on paper alone; now a video check had been added.

*So papers alone will not do it.*

Sujin leaned back in her chair. She put a cigarette to her lips, then realized it would be the first in five years, and put it out.

*To swap the directors out, the sitting directors have to come up on the screen.*

Those directors did not exist. They were people with a name and no face.

*With no face, how do you show up on the screen.*

Sujin sat like that for a long while.

Then, all at once, something from five years ago came back to her.

The day Jihoon came down to pick her out. The way he had made an identity that did not exist and seated her in a conglomerate as one of its staff.

*If it does not exist, make it.*

The look in Sujin's eyes changed.

*What he did to me then, I will give back to him exactly.*
