The iron door opened.
The outside air touched her face. It had been five years.
Sujin closed her eyes for a moment and opened them. Then she started walking at once. No time was spent on feeling.
There was no one in front of the prison. There was no reason for anyone to come and meet her.
*I knew that.*
Sujin walked as far as the bus stop. In her hand there was only one worn notebook.
A public phone in front of a convenience store.
Sujin punched in the number she had kept in her head for five years. It was the number that had got her a passport on that last morning, back in the alley days.
"...It is me."
A short silence came over the line.
"So you are alive."
"I am. And I remember the bill I never settled."
"Forget it. You paid for the goods that day."
"I will pay it back with interest. In return, do one job for me."
"You have money?"
"There are some bills still **outstanding** from five years back, goods that were handed over and never paid for. I call those in and it is done."
Back when she worked the alleys, there were jobs where the goods went out and the money never came in. It was money she had given up on when she went to prison.
*They can hardly say no now. Everyone will know I am out.*
"What job."
Sujin opened the notebook. What she had learned from Dogyeong over five years and what she had pieced together herself stood packed close together in it.
"I am going to find an account. One that sits abroad."
> **[What Han Dogyeong Passed On — From Sujin's Notebook]**
>
> | Item | Details |
> |---|---|
> | Target | Shell companies in Jihoon's name (three or more, by estimate) |
> | Feature | The Taesan finance structure copied as it stands |
> | Weak point | Run by one man with no staff to manage it |
> | Note | Designed by Dogyeong, used by Jihoon |
This was the last thing Han Dogyeong passed on.
"That structure he is using now. I built it in the first place."
Dogyeong had said it evenly.
"After he took my seat, he took the frame I had made and used it as it was. He had no way of building a new one."
"...Then."
"Then it means I know where the keyhole sits."
There was one question that had gone unanswered for Sujin for five years. Dogyeong gave her the answer to that as well.
"If he took the money, should he not have gone long ago? Why is he still hanging on at the company?"
"He cannot go."
Dogyeong gave a short laugh.
"Fifty billion won sitting in a shell company is not money you can use. To bring it home you need a **pretext**, a reason you can show people, and to make that reason you need a company with something real in it."
"So Taesan is the channel for it."
"That is it. Drawing investment from abroad, capital raised at the affiliates, fees for advice on a merger. He lets it in a little at a time over several years by things like that. That is why he came in as the man for mergers."
Dogyeong paused for a moment, then went on.
"And by now his thinking has probably grown bigger."
"How."
"When you sit there to **launder** money, to wash it until it looks like clean money, you start to see things. You see how loosely the company is run. You went in to wash fifty billion won, and it starts to look as if you could take the company itself."
Sujin had turned that over for five years.
Jihoon had moved fifty billion won out of the country. That money would be asleep in some shell company now. And the blueprint of that company was now inside Sujin's notebook.
Sujin closed the notebook and gave a short laugh.
*What was it I did best.*
Making a company that does not exist. Standing up on paper a company that has never existed in the world, and making it look as if it has turned a profit for ten years.
*Then taking a company that does exist should work too.*
Where Jihoon had hidden the fifty billion won was a shell company abroad. She had no thought of breaking into the account itself. Sujin was not a hacker.
There was another way instead.
> **[How Sujin Means to Go About It]**
>
> | Point | The usual way | Sujin's way |
> |---|---|---|
> | Target | The account | The company itself |
> | Means | Breaking into the system | Changing the papers that carry control |
> | Result | Can be traced | A lawful change of name on the register |
Not stealing the account, but taking over the whole company that owns it.
Replacing the directors and changing the **signatory**, the one whose name goes on the papers, is the start of it. Then you replace the **proxy**, the person who stands in for the owner, and it is done. Then that account is not stolen; on paper the lawful CEO is moving her own company's money.
*On paper.*
Sujin chewed that word over once more inside.
In the end it was rigging the table again. The way of it was no different from five years before. The one difference was that this time nobody had told her to.
*Let me do it knowing this time.*
All of it was paperwork. It was what Sujin had done all her life.
*And those companies were Dogyeong's to begin with.*
Sujin put the notebook in her bag and got to her feet.
*Three months, maybe.*
That was what she thought at the time.
