Govinda did not understand. But he loved his friend, and so he did as he was asked. He bent down and touched his lips to Siddhartha's forehead.

And in that moment, something happened to him that he could never afterward explain.

He no longer saw the face of his friend. Where Siddhartha's face had been, he saw instead a river of faces — hundreds of them, thousands, flowing and changing, none of them staying. He saw a baby being born and a man dying. He saw lovers, and killers, and kings, and beggars. He saw fish and birds and beasts. He saw Kamala, and a newborn child, and an old man weeping. He saw the Buddha. He saw faces of joy and faces of pain, faces being crushed and faces being made new — and all of them flowed into one another, and none of them was ever truly lost, and all of them, together, were happening at once, like the many waters of a single river.

And over all these thousand faces, unmoving, lay the still, quiet smile of Siddhartha — the same smile, Govinda saw now, that he had once seen on the face of the dying Buddha, so many years before. It was the smile of someone who had seen the whole of it — all the joy and all the sorrow — and had said yes to all of it, and was at peace.

Govinda's own eyes filled with tears. For one moment — only one — he understood what his friend had lived. He felt the oneness that no teaching had ever been able to give him. It passed through him like a great wave, and then it was gone, and he could not have put a single word to it if his life depended on it. But he had felt it. For the length of one breath, he had truly seen.

He bowed low before the smile in which all things had become one.
