English

The wound did not close. Month after month it stayed open, and Siddhartha carried it everywhere.

He was a good ferryman still. But now, when he took travelers across, he watched the ordinary people with new eyes — not with the old, cool pride, but with something like envy. A mother scolding her child, a father worrying over his son, merchants and farmers living their small, fierce, loving lives — he had once looked down on all of it. Now he saw that they had something he did not. They loved. They loved blindly, foolishly, painfully, and they were alive with it. All his long wisdom had never made him love anyone the way this simple ache made him love his lost son.

One day, hurting more than usual, he crossed the river to look for the boy again, and again could not, and came back defeated. He knelt at the water to drink, worn and old.

His face looked up at him from the surface. And this time he truly saw it.

It was an old face now, tired and lined. And it was, he suddenly saw, his father's face. He remembered, as if it were yesterday, the young man who had stood all night in the prayer room and then walked away from his father into the forest. He remembered how his father must have grieved. He remembered that he had never gone back, never sent word, never once eased the old man's pain.

*I did to my father exactly what my son now does to me*, he thought. *My father lost his son, as I have lost mine. It is the same wound. It has come all the way around.*

He listened to the river, and the river was laughing. It laughed softly at all of it — at fathers and sons, at leaving and losing, at the whole long circle that never ended and never learned. It was not a cruel laugh. It was the laugh of something that saw the whole of it at once, and found it, in the end, whole and right.

The river laughed. And slowly, Siddhartha began to laugh with it.
