English
The robe trader's name was Hanan.
He was from Seid, and he supplied cloth to three workshops making robes for the rite. He touched the cloth on the wall twice and looked into what was left in the pail.
"Why does something three years old give this color?"
"It is this color because it sat," Rine said. "New dye does not do this."
Hanan looked at her.
"...How do you know that?"
Honestly she did not. The color had looked different the evening before, so she had mixed some.
"Because I have never sold any. It sat three years because no one bought it."
Hanan laughed.
"Fifteen sacks?"
"One thousand eight hundred and sixty geun."
"Is all of it this color?"
"It came from one place on one day."
Hanan nodded. Then he named a price.
"One gwan eighty a geun."
Rine took one breath. It came to three thousand three hundred and forty-eight gwan.
Drawing up the contract took an hour.
Bern read out each **clause** and Rine checked it. Hanan waited. He was not a man to hurry.
> **SALE CONTRACT**
> *Drawn up: 16 July · Place: Rahel Market, West quarter No. 47*

> | Seller | Haran Trading House (No. R-2291) |
> | Buyer | Hanan Bek (Seid Cloth Guild) |
> | Goods | Southern blue dye, third grade |
> | Quantity | 1,860 geun |
> | Unit price | 1 silver gwan 80 |
> | Total | *3,348 silver gwan* |
> | Payment | *Promissory note (90 days)* |
> | Issuing house | Rendal Company |
> | Taken by | Haran Trading House |
Rine stopped at the last two lines.
"Is this a note?"
"I do not carry cash," Hanan said. "How would anyone carry three thousand gwan?"
"...That is true."
"Every note in this market is a Rendal note. There is only one exchange house here."
Rine looked at the name.
Bern looked at it too. Neither of them said anything.
After Hanan left, Rine sat at the stall holding the note.
"Uncle. What is a ninety-day note?"
"A paper saying that in ninety days the Rendal Company pays you three thousand three hundred and forty-eight gwan."
"In ninety days?"
"In ninety days."
"Can I not have it today?"
"You can have it **discounted**. They **deduct** ninety days of interest and hand you cash now."
"How much do they take off?"
"Usually one tenth."
Rine worked it out. Three hundred and thirty-four gwan eighty.
"So I get about three thousand. For now that is enough. The debt is four thousand two hundred gwan, so it is still short, but—"
"Miss."
"Yes."
"You have to ask the issuing house for it."
Rine lifted her head.
"...From Mr. Rendal?"
"From the Rendal Company."
The exchange house stood beside the bridge.
Rine put the note up at the window. A clerk took it and went into the back. He came out again about ten minutes later.
"No discount."
"Why?"
"It is the issuing house's decision."
"And the reason?"
"We do not give reasons."
Rine stood in front of the window. Behind her she heard people waiting. She had to step aside, but her feet would not move.
"So I have to wait ninety days?"
"That is so."
"My repayment is **due** in fourteen days."
The clerk did not answer.
Rine took the note and went outside. The sun was high. It was noon of the fourth day.
She sat down by the river.
Bern sat beside her. For a long time neither spoke, and then Bern spoke first.
"You made the deal."
"...Yes."
"By the promise, the deadline moves back four months."
"Then in ninety days I take the note and settle the debt."
"That is so."
Rine looked at the river. A cart went over the wooden bridge.
"Uncle."
"Yes."
"Do you think Mr. Rendal knew I would make a deal today?"
Bern thought for a moment.
"...I do not think he did."
"Then why is the note a Rendal note?"
"Because the only exchange house in this market is theirs—"
"Then whatever I sold, the note was always going to be a Rendal note."
Bern stopped.
"Whether I win or lose, he loses nothing. If I fail he takes the trading house. If I succeed he keeps three thousand gwan of mine for ninety days."
Rine held the note up. The paper showed through against the light.
"This was his board from the start."
The Rendal office was on the floor above the exchange house.
Rendal was standing at the window. When Rine came in he spoke without turning.
"I heard. Three thousand three hundred and forty-eight gwan. Well done."
"Move my deadline back four months."
"I will. I promised."
"And discount this note."
"That I will not do."
"Why."
"Because it is my decision."
Rine put the note on the table.
"Then I will sell it to you."
Rendal turned around.
"...What?"
"A note for three thousand three hundred and forty-eight gwan. I sell it for two thousand nine hundred. Now, in cash."
"..."
"That leaves you four hundred and forty-eight gwan. More than one tenth."
Rendal walked to the table. He picked the note up and looked at it.
"You know you lose on this."
"I know."
"With a discount you would get three thousand gwan. At two thousand nine hundred—"
"I lose a hundred gwan. I know."
"Then why."
"Because I do not know what else you would do in those ninety days."
Rendal took his eyes off the note and looked at Rine.
Rine did not rise on her toes. The table was low enough that she did not need to.
"Today is the fourth day. Give me the cash now."
Rendal folded the note. The folding took a while.
"...Open the safe."
The clerk standing by the door moved.
Rendal took out the contract and wrote in the four-month **extension**. Then he stopped while signing.
"What price did Hanan name?"
"One gwan eighty a geun."
"...He sells it at four gwan a geun in Seid."
Rine looked at him.
"You knew?"
"I knew." Rendal finished the signature. "You won this one, but you could have had twice as much."
He pushed the contract across.
"And one more thing. Your standing with the traders' union."
"...Sorry?"
"Your father missed last quarter's union dues. This quarter went by as well." Rendal picked up his hat. "By the rules it ends today."
