English

They returned to Rahel on the fourth of September.

Sera sat at the warehouse table with her abacus. Martin stood by the door.

Rine spread the list in the middle of the table.

"I'll explain. It's long."

Sera pushed the abacus aside.

"First, the coming-of-age robe has to deepen in color at sundown. Three-year-old southern indigo does that. New dye doesn't."

"I know," Sera said. "You hung a shirt on the wall in July, Miss."

"Second, Doryun Company bought six thousand geun of new northern dye in early August and sent it to Seid. It went into the three workshops."

"Did they put in the kind that does not change?"

"They did."

"..."

"Third, the workshops are dyeing right now. Within a few days, they'll know the color doesn't change. Once they know, they have to buy again."

Rine tapped the list.

"Fourth, to buy again, they need three-year-old stock, and that isn't in the market. It has no value, so no one buys it. It's just sitting in eleven warehouses."

Sera looked at the list.

"Fifth, right now only Uncle Hanan and I know where it is."

Martin spoke from the door.

"There is no money."

Rine looked up.

"There's five hundred sixty-nine gwan."

"That's not enough for eleven places."

"How much a geun could we buy at?"

Sera pushed one abacus bead.

"It is stock that has not sold in three years. It does not even earn its warehouse space. Offer two pun a geun, and they will take it."

"At two pun, how much can five hundred gwan buy?"

"Two thousand five hundred geun. Two thousand five hundred geun."

Rine wrote out the sum.

"We need three thousand six hundred geun. Three thousand for the three cities, six hundred for the mountain side."

"One thousand one hundred geun short."

"I'll take the **rest** on consignment."

Bern spoke for the first time.

"On **consignment**, the payment splits after it sells. No money goes out now."

"So the warehouse owner has nothing to lose."

"Nothing. If it does not sell, it is worthless stock again, same as before."

They spent five days going to the eleven places.

The four in Rahel were done in a day. The five nearby villages took three days. Yona took the wagon and made the two toward the capital.

Nine places agreed. Two said they had already thrown theirs out.

Six took the price — two pun a geun. Three handed theirs over on consignment.

The last house was a small general shop in a back alley on Rahel's west side. It had no sign.

The owner opened the warehouse door. Eight sacks were stacked against the wall.

"This is about four hundred geun."

"I'll give you two pun," Rine said. "Eighty gwan."

The owner looked at the sacks. There were marks on the floor where they had not been moved in three years.

"Eighty gwan?"

"Yes."

"I paid four hundred gwan for this."

Rine was quiet for a moment.

"It's eighty gwan now."

The owner dragged the sacks toward the door.

"Take them. At least the space opens up."

On the ninth of September, all the sacks were in the warehouse.

Sera counted.

"Three thousand six hundred forty geun. Three thousand six hundred forty geun."

"And the money?"

"Five hundred gwan went out for the two thousand five hundred geun bought outright. Sixty-nine gwan left."

"Sixty-nine gwan."

"The one thousand one hundred forty consignment geun settles at two pun a geun each, after it sells."

Rine looked around the warehouse. The sacks filled two walls. It smelled three years old.

"Uncle. There's one problem left now."

"I know," Bern said. "Doryun Company."

Rine took out the guarantee.

> | **Added note** | **During the term of guarantee, all trade by Haran Trading House passes through Doryun Company** |

"What happens if we don't go through them?"

"That is a **breach** of the guarantee. If the guarantee breaks, the reinstatement is revoked."

"And if we do go through them?"

"Doryun Company sees everything. What is bought for how much, sold for how much. And they take one tenth."

Rine set the guarantee on the table.

"Then let them see."

It took Rine three hours to write the document.

Sera checked the numbers, Bern checked the wording.

Bern's finger stopped at the last line.

"Why put this line in? If we give them double the **commission**, they'll want to set the price too."

"If they set it, doubling the commission is no use."

"..."

"They're sitting on six thousand geun right now. If it doesn't sell, how much do they lose?"

Sera set down the abacus.

"Northern indigo runs about one and a half gwan a geun. Six thousand geun is nine thousand gwan."

"To someone about to lose nine thousand gwan, I'm offering over two thousand gwan. And that is just for selling my goods."

Rine folded the document.

"They don't care what the price is. It's two tenths either way."

The Doryun Company clerk took the document upstairs.

Rine stood by the door. Cassian sat on the stairs.

"Filed another one?"

"Yes."

"What was in it."

"I won't say."

Cassian rested his arm on his knee.

"You went to Seid."

"I went."

"Did you see our goods?"

"I saw them."

"How were they."

Rine looked at him.

"I put it in the document."

Cassian was quiet for a moment.

"...Bad?"

"Yes."

An hour and a half later, the clerk came down. A sheet of paper and a note.

> **NOTICE OF ADDENDUM CHANGE**

The note was three lines.

> *I asked the workshops. It was true.
> We lost nine thousand gwan, and you told us and sold two thousand gwan's worth.
> You set the price.
> — Raihan*

She sent a letter to Seid. It took four days.

On the thirteenth of September, Hanan's wagon stopped in front of the warehouse. This time he brought five carts.

Hanan opened a sack and put his hand in. Color stained his fingers.

"Three thousand six hundred forty geun?"

"Yes."

"The three workshops sent people to me yesterday. They can't find any **supply**."

"And the mountain villages?"

"None there either."

Rine stood beside the sacks.

"Uncle. Last year it was four gwan a geun."

"It was four gwan."

"This year there's no supply."

Hanan wiped the color off his hand with a cloth.

"Name it."

Rine looked at the sacks for a moment. Nothing anyone had bought in three years. Two pun a geun, five days ago.

"Three gwan a geun."

Hanan's hand stopped.

"...You could ask four."

"Three gwan."

"Why cut it?"

"Because I'll be selling next year too," Rine said. "If I take four this year, the workshops will look elsewhere next year. At three, they won't."

Hanan tied the sack back up.

"...You said, if two people know the market, two people set it."

"Yes."

"Today you're the one who set it."

Sera worked the abacus.

"Three thousand six hundred forty geun at three gwan a geun. Ten thousand nine hundred twenty gwan. Ten thousand nine hundred twenty gwan."

Rine looked at the number.

"Take off two tenths commission?"

"Two thousand one hundred eighty-four gwan goes out. Eight thousand seven hundred thirty-six left."

"And the consignment settlement?"

"One thousand one hundred forty geun at two pun a geun. Two hundred twenty-eight gwan goes out."

"So?"

"Eight thousand five hundred eight gwan. Add the sixty-nine gwan left over, and it's eight thousand five hundred seventy-seven gwan."

Rine set her hand on the table.

"I have to repay four thousand two hundred."

"Repay it, and four thousand three hundred seventy-seven gwan is left."

The warehouse was quiet.

Yona stopped in the middle of moving a sack to a cart. Martin stood by the door, rope still in hand.

Bern looked at the counting board twice.

"...Miss."

"Yes."

"On the eleventh of July, our assets were fifty-two gwan."

Rine listened to that. Sacks had lined the warehouse wall, and now they were all sold.

"Two months."

The five carts left, and evening came.

Rine was about to close the warehouse door when her hand stopped.

Someone was standing at the end of the alley. The owner of the west-side general shop. The one who had handed over eight sacks for eighty gwan.

He did not come in. He just stood there.

Rine stood holding the door.

"...Sir."

The owner said nothing, stood there a while, then turned and left.
