71화 MJ

MJ는 말이 많았다.

점심을 같이 먹으면서 MJ가 물었다.

"So how long have you known him?"

"About a year."

"A year." MJ가 젓가락을 멈췄다. "Only a year?"

"…네. 왜요?"

MJ가 잠깐 뭔가 생각하는 표정을 지었다.

"Nothing. It's just — when he interviewed me in June, he asked what I'd do if a colleague found a mistake in my work and told everyone at once."

은호가 고개를 들었다.

"I said I'd fix it. And he said that wasn't the question." MJ가 어깨를 으쓱했다. "He said the question was whether I'd still trust that person afterwards."

"…그래서 뭐라고 하셨어요?"

"I said it depends why they did it." MJ가 웃었다. "He said that was the right answer. Then he hired me."

은호는 물을 마셨다.

작년 12월, 회의실에서 있었던 일이 떠올랐다. 지안의 발표 중간에 손을 들었던 날.

*그때 저 사람은 아무 말도 안 했었는데.*

"Anyway," MJ가 말했다. "He's a strange guy. But he's fair. That's rarer than you'd think."

MJ talked a lot.

Over lunch he asked,

"So how long have you known him?"

"A year." MJ's chopsticks stopped. "Only a year?"

"…Yes. Why?"

He made a thinking face for a moment.

"Nothing. It's just — when he interviewed me in June, he asked what I'd do if a colleague found a mistake in my work and told everyone at once."

Eunho looked up.

"I said I'd fix it. And he said that wasn't the question." MJ shrugged. "He said the question was whether I'd still trust that person afterwards."

"…And what did you say?"

"I said it depends why they did it." MJ laughed. "He said that was the right answer. Then he hired me."

Eunho drank his water.

He thought of the meeting room the previous December. The day he had raised his hand in the middle of Ms. Kang's presentation.

*He didn't say anything then.*
