6월 3일 화요일, 사내 게시판에 공고가 떴다.

*싱가포르 지사 내부 지원 — 운영 담당 1석*

은호는 그 공고를 세 번 읽었다. 자격 요건, 마감일, 제출 서류. 다 아는 내용이었다. 이미 두 달 전부터 알고 있었으니까.

그런데 막상 화면에 뜨니까 손이 조금 떨렸다.

점심때 옆자리 선배가 물었다. "지원할 거야?"

"…고민 중이에요."

"고민할 게 뭐 있어. 자격 되잖아."

"근데 실무 넘겨받은 지 두 달밖에 안 됐어요. 제가 가면 여기가 또 비어요."

선배가 젓가락을 내려놨다.

"그거 네가 걱정할 일이야?"

"…네?"

"부서 채우는 건 팀장님 일이야. 네가 안 가면 그 자리를 딴 사람이 채워. 그러면 너는 여기 남고, 그 사람이 가는 거고." 선배가 어깨를 으쓱했다. "그게 다야."

은호는 아무 말도 하지 못했다.

그날 저녁, 은호는 지원서 양식을 열었다.

첫 칸에 이름을 쓰고, 그다음 칸에서 멈췄다.

한참을 그 칸만 봤다.

Eunho read it three times. Eligibility, deadline, documents required. He knew all of it. He had known for two months.

Still, seeing it on the screen, he felt his hands shake a little.

At lunch his colleague asked, "Are you applying?"

"…I'm thinking about it."

"What's there to think about. You're eligible."

"It's only been two months since I took over operations. If I go, this desk is empty again."

His colleague set down his chopsticks.

"Is that yours to worry about?"

"…Sorry?"

"Filling the department is the team leader's job. If you don't go, someone else takes that position. Then you stay here and they go." He shrugged. "That's all it is."

Eunho couldn't answer.

That evening, he opened the application form.

He typed his name in the first field and stopped at the next one.

He looked at that field for a long time.
