55화 다음 날

5월 1일, 두 사람은 만났다.

회사가 아니라 한강이었다. 태경이 그러자고 했다.

날이 맑았다. 자전거 타는 사람들이 지나갔고, 강물이 반짝였다.

두 사람은 한참 말없이 걸었다.

"편지 읽었어요." 은호가 먼저 말했다.

"…네."

"끝까지 안 쓰셨더라고요."

태경이 걸음을 멈췄다.

"거기서 뭐라고 써야 할지 모르겠어서요."

"지금은요?"

태경이 강을 봤다. 한참 아무 말도 없었다.

"그때 그만두려고 했던 이유가," 태경이 천천히 말했다. "설명이 필요 없는 곳으로 가고 싶어서였어요."

"네."

"그런데 작년 여름에, 은호 씨가 저한테 아무것도 안 물어봤어요."

은호가 태경을 봤다.

"설명이 필요 없는 사람은 처음이었어요." 태경이 말했다. "그래서 안 그만뒀어요."

바람이 불었다.

"그 얘기를 쓰려다가," 태경이 짧게 웃었다. "쓰면 은호 씨가 부담스러울 것 같아서 못 썼어요."

"부담스럽지 않아요."

"…지금은요?"

"지금도요." 은호가 태경을 똑바로 봤다. "그리고 앞으로도요."

태경이 은호를 봤다.

강가에 두 사람만 서 있었다.

On May 1, they met.

Not at the office, but by the river. Taekyung had suggested it.

The day was clear. Cyclists passed, and the water glittered.

They walked for a long time without speaking.

"I read the letter," Eunho said first.

"…Yes."

"You didn't finish it."

Taekyung stopped walking.

"I didn't know what to write after that."

"And now?"

Taekyung looked at the river. He said nothing for a long moment.

"The reason I was going to quit," he said slowly, "was that I wanted to go somewhere no explanation was required."

"Yes."

"But last summer, you didn't ask me anything."

Eunho looked at him.

"You were the first person who didn't need an explanation," Taekyung said. "So I didn't quit."

The wind moved.

"I was going to write that," he laughed briefly. "And then I thought it would be a burden to you, so I couldn't."

"It isn't a burden."

"…Now?"

"Now too." Eunho looked straight at him. "And after this."

Taekyung looked at him.

There was no one else by the river.
