52화 지하 창고

지하 창고는 조용했다.

형광등 하나가 깜빡였고, 재고 선반이 줄줄이 서 있었다. 두 시가 되자 위층에서 아주 희미하게 소리가 들렸다. 정말 희미했다.

두 사람은 재고 목록을 하나씩 확인했다.

"품번 3104, 열두 개."

"열두 개 맞아요."

한동안 그렇게만 했다. 은호가 부르고 태경이 확인하고.

경보음이 멈춘 건 이 분쯤 뒤였다.

"…끝났네요." 은호가 말했다.

태경이 손을 멈췄다.

한참 아무 말도 없다가, 낮게 물었다.

"작년에도 은호 씨였죠."

"…네?"

"팀장님한테 메일 보낸 거."

은호가 고개를 들었다.

"어떻게 아셨어요?"

"팀장님이 말씀하셨어요. 작년에." 태경이 선반을 봤다. "부탁받지 않은 동료를 대신해서 묻는다고 썼다면서요."

"…그게, 그때는—"

"고마웠어요."

은호가 말을 멈췄다.

"작년에는 말 못 했어요." 태경이 담담하게 말했다. "그때 고맙다고 하면, 은호 씨가 다 알게 되니까."

"지금은요?"

"지금은 알아도 돼요."

The basement warehouse was quiet.

One fluorescent light flickered, and rows of shelving stood in lines. At two o'clock a very faint sound came from above. Genuinely faint.

They went through the inventory list one item at a time.

"Part 3104, twelve units."

"Twelve, confirmed."

They did only that for a while. Eunho reading, Taekyung confirming.

The alarm stopped about two minutes later.

"…It's over," Eunho said.

Taekyung's hands stopped.

He said nothing for a long moment, then asked quietly,

"It was you last year, wasn't it."

"…Sorry?"

"The email to the team leader."

Eunho looked up.

"How did you know?"

"He told me. Last year." Taekyung looked at the shelves. "He said you wrote that you were asking on behalf of a colleague who hadn't asked you to."

"…At the time, I just—"

"Thank you."

Eunho stopped.

"I couldn't say it last year," Taekyung said evenly. "If I had thanked you then, you would have known everything."

"And now?"

"Now it's all right if you know."
