30화 물어보지 않는 것

그날 저녁, 은호는 태경 자리 옆에 오래 서 있었다.

물어보고 싶었다. 3년 전에 무슨 일이 있었는지. 왜 하윤은 알고 나는 모르는지.

그런데 입이 떨어지지 않았다.

작년 여름에 은호가 배운 게 하나 있다면, 묻는 것이 늘 다가가는 방법은 아니라는 거였다. 8월에 "소매 좀 걷으세요"라고 했을 때, 그건 걱정이었지만 태경에게는 밀고 들어오는 일이었다.

"뭐 할 말 있어요?" 태경이 화면에서 눈을 떼며 물었다.

"…아뇨."

"있는 것 같은데."

은호가 잠깐 망설이다 말했다.

"나중에요. 지금은 아니고."

태경이 은호를 봤다. 뭔가 짐작한 얼굴 같기도 했고, 아무것도 모르는 얼굴 같기도 했다.

"…알겠어요."

그러곤 덧붙였다. "나중에 물어보면, 대답할게요."

은호는 그 말에 조금 놀랐다.

That evening, Eunho stood beside Taekyung's desk for a long time.

He wanted to ask. What had happened three years ago. Why she knew and he didn't.

But the words wouldn't come.

If he had learned one thing last summer, it was that asking is not always a way of getting closer. When he'd said "at least roll up your sleeves" in August, it had been concern — but to Taekyung it had been someone pushing in.

"Is there something you want to say?" Taekyung looked up from his screen.

"…No."

"It looks like there is."

Eunho hesitated, then said,

"Later. Not now."

Taekyung looked at him. His face might have meant he had guessed something, or that he had no idea at all.

"…All right."

Then he added, "If you ask later, I'll answer."

That surprised Eunho a little.
