**Subject: Nomination and Visa Application — Outcome**

**Your application has been approved.**

**Subclass 482 — Skills in Demand (Core Skills Stream). Nominated occupation: Chef (351311). Sponsor: AURA Group Pty Ltd. Period of stay: 4 years.**

**Applicant: Han-gyeol Seo**

English

Friday night, the office after close.

Hangyeol set the folder on the desk. Daniel did not open it.

"I have to give an answer by Monday morning."

"Right."

"......"

"Hangyeol."

Daniel turned his chair and looked at him straight on.

"What would you like me to do."

Hangyeol raised his eyes.

In ten months this man had never once asked that. Not while he made the file. Not while he wrote six lines of conditions or held out an envelope with every stamp on it.

"......You really are asking."

"You told me to ask."

"Yes."

Hangyeol gave a short laugh. His eyes went hot while he laughed.

"But I haven't got an answer ready. I didn't think you would ask."

"Then think."

Daniel leaned back in his chair.

"I'll wait until the weekend."

Saturday night. The two of them were in Hangyeol's room.

They were sitting side by side at the end of the bed, and Hangyeol had a notebook open on his knees. Three lines were written in it.

"There are three."

"Say them."

"One. Don't make a post."

Hangyeol spoke without lifting his eyes from the notebook.

"Making a sous chef post in Melbourne and calling me back to it. If you do that, I won't come."

"......All right."

"I mean it. And don't call Chloe either."

"I won't."

Daniel ran a hand over his face.

"Honestly, I picked the **receiver** up once yesterday."

"Daniel."

"I didn't press a single button."

Hangyeol looked at him for a moment and went back to the notebook.

"Two. Fix the kitchen."

Daniel's hand stopped.

"......What do you mean."

"While I'm gone."

Hangyeol closed the notebook.

"Another working holiday cook comes next. One with no English, a short visa, nobody to tell anything to. Make it a kitchen where a cook like that doesn't have to hold out half a year. A kitchen where nobody has to count the lines that go missing from the prep list."

The room went quiet.

"Only the chef can do that. I can't."

Daniel did not answer for a long time.

"......I don't know how it's done."

"I know."

Hangyeol put his own hand over the back of Daniel's.

"Because you didn't try it for four years. But this time you can do it while asking me."

"What's the third one."

Hangyeol folded the notebook and put it down beside him.

"The third one is a bit childish."

"Say it."

"......Call once a week."

Daniel looked at him.

"Is that all?"

"Not a video call, just a call. If I see your face I'll want to see you more, so no."

"Hangyeol."

"What."

"I'm going to call every day."

"......Every day is a bit much."

"Every day."

Hangyeol burst out laughing. Then in the middle of laughing the tears came, and to hide them he pressed his forehead into Daniel's shoulder.

Daniel put a hand around the back of his head. This time it was not a hand that held him in place.

But Hangyeol did not lift his face.

"Daniel."

"Yes."

"I'm not going home tonight."

The voice was buried in his shoulder and hard to hear. Daniel understood it anyway.

For eight months understanding this voice had been his job.

Daniel lifted Hangyeol's chin.

The eyes were red. But they did not turn away. Four years ago and ten months ago too, this man had never been the first to drop his eyes.

"You're sure."

"I'm sure."

"You have to call Chloe tomorrow morning."

"I will."

"And get on a plane the week after."

"I will."

"So if we do this tonight."

Daniel's thumb pressed Hangyeol's lower lip. The sentence stopped there.

"If we do, then what."

Hangyeol took that hand and pulled it to the back of his own neck.

"It'll be harder to let me go. I know."

"......"

"That's the point. So you can't forget me as long as you live."

Daniel's head came down without hesitation.

The first one was short. From the next it was not. Breath that could not be swallowed filled the room.

The hand around the back of his neck tightened. Hangyeol felt his back meet the bed, and then the weight that came down over it.

The notebook which had been on his knees fell to the floor with a dull sound, but neither of them turned to look.

Kissing deep as though swallowing each other's breath, Daniel's long fingers worked at the shirt buttons without letting up. When three had come undone and the cloth slid aside, Hangyeol caught his wrist hard, breathing fast.

"The light......"

"Leave it on."

"......"

"Tonight I want to see all of it."

It was Korean, low and rasping, with the grace and the courtesy thrown off. The language he had kept deep in the kitchen for eight months was being used on this bed. It carried raw want and raw grief.

Hangyeol let his hand go, slowly.

Daniel's lips came down along the jaw and fell to the neck where the pulse was racing.

Hangyeol knew how plainly the breath breaking out of him rang in the room, and he did not hold it back. There was no reason to. Inside this room there was no rule, no clause, no corridor for anything to leak into. With the long **absence** that would begin the next day still ahead of them, all that was left was skin and unbearable heat.

The thin shirt came all the way down off his shoulders. The moment the cool air touched bare skin, Daniel's rough breath stopped over Hangyeol's chest.

"What is it."

"Your hand."

Daniel lifted Hangyeol's right hand quietly.

A hard **callus** set into the side of the index finger. The thick pad at the base of the thumb. Three red-dark oven marks on the back of the hand that would not go. And a scar on the inside of the wrist blurred by splashed oil.

Five years of hard work that began in a cold kitchen at six in the morning and that nobody had ever called beautiful. And at the end of it, the eight months in which the two of them had recognized each other.

Daniel kissed the calluses and the scars one at a time, very slowly. Every time the wet lips pressed the skin and came away, Hangyeol's shoulders shook a little. The tenderness was so much that it felt like pain.

"......Don't."

"Why."

"Because if you do that I cry."

"Cry."

Daniel murmured it low with his face buried deep in Hangyeol's palm. What touched the palm was his breath, and then something hot that fell and soaked in.

"From tomorrow it's nine hundred kilometers. So do all of it today. Cry, tear at me, all of it."

Hangyeol pushed his fingers deep into the sweat-damp hair and pulled him hard toward himself.

This time Hangyeol was first.

The hands undoing Daniel's shirt buttons slipped twice out of haste and grief. Daniel started to give a dry laugh. But when Hangyeol kissed deep under the line of his collarbone and bit the skin lightly, the laugh died in his throat.

"Haa......"

A sound with no restraint in it came up through Daniel's throat. In eight months at the kitchen bench it had never once been heard.

Hangyeol decided to set that sound down in his memory. Nine hundred kilometers away there would be no warmth to touch and no kiss that went into the skin. There would only be a dry voice on a phone.

"Daniel."

"......Yeah."

"While I'm still here."

Hangyeol looked straight up at him from below. At the corner of the reddened eyes one line of tears he could not hold back finally ran down his temple.

"Don't hold anything back. Break if you have to, all the way."

Daniel's large hand took Hangyeol's waist hard. There was no answer after that.

Their bodies locked together and the lamp beside the bed rattled and went over onto the floor. The room sank half into the dark. A parting neither of them had ever wanted would come once this night was over. So they held each other tight in that dark until the breath was up at their throats.

Monday morning, eight forty.

Hangyeol called Chloe. She picked up on the second ring.

"I'll go."

"Good."

There was no surprise in Chloe's answer.

"I'll lodge it today. The bridging visa should be out within three days."

"Chloe."

"Yes."

"Let me check one thing. You said a move inside the group gets looked at after two years."

"I did."

"If there's a post in Melbourne at that point, I'm the one who applies for it, right?"

A short laugh came from the other end of the line.

"Of course. And I'll be reading your file then too."

"......Yes."

"You might not get it."

"I know."

"Then that's that."

Four weeks later.

Hangyeol opened the mail in the staff room after close. Daniel was standing beside him.

*Subject: Nomination and Visa Application — Outcome*

Hangyeol scrolled the screen down.

*Your application has been approved.*

*Subclass 482 — Skills in Demand (Core Skills Stream). Nominated occupation: Chef (351311). Sponsor: AURA Group Pty Ltd. Period of stay: 4 years.*

The phone almost slipped out of Hangyeol's hand.

"......It says four years."

"Read it. Again."

"It says four years."

Hangyeol raised his head.

"It says I can be here four years."

Daniel said nothing at all.

When Hangyeol turned his head to look, this man had one hand set against a stainless locker. His head was down, so his face could not be seen.

"Daniel."

"......Give me a minute."

"Are you crying?"

"I'm not crying."

"You are."

"I said I'm not."

Hangyeol pulled at his arm. Daniel came without resisting.

Hangyeol said nothing. He put the phone into Daniel's hand instead.

Daniel looked down at the screen.

And he looked for a long time at the name under the line of **approval**.

*Applicant: Han-gyeol Seo*

Nothing was sitting on top of that name. No doctored job description, no rumor that had run half a year, no words about being the chef's boyfriend.

It was a name standing on its own.

"Hangyeol."

"Yes."

"Can I look at this a while."

"Look at it."

Hangyeol sat down beside him.

"I don't quite believe it either yet."

The night before he flew, after close at AURA.

The staff stood around Hangyeol and each said something. The commis told the duck story three times, and nobody teased the two of them. There was nothing to tease. Everyone had known long before.

Liam came at the end.

"Han."

"Yes."

"I told you back then. Don't become special."

"I remember."

Liam knocked Hangyeol's shoulder once. This time he did not put an arm around him.

"I'll **withdraw** that."

"......Why."

"You did become special, and you didn't go under."

Liam closed one eye slowly and opened it again, the way he had on the day they first met.

"That wasn't that man doing well, that was you doing well. Know that when you go."

Hangyeol laughed.

"Thank you, Liam."

"Call me when you get to Sydney. I haven't given up yet."

"Daniel can hear you."

"He's meant to."

The next morning, Tullamarine Airport.

Daniel came all the way to the gate.

"What are you doing coming this far. There's lunch today."

"I handed it to the second."

"A head chef shouldn't do that."

"No, he shouldn't."

Daniel shrugged. And after that he said nothing.

The boarding call came.

Hangyeol shifted his grip on the knife bag.

"Daniel."

"Yeah."

"Say something."

Daniel drew a short breath in.

Four years ago he had said nothing in this same place. Back then he had not known what to say. Whatever he said felt as if it would only cover his own fault. So he had just stood there.

And that silence lasted for four years.

"Go well, Hangyeol."

Daniel reached out and gripped the handle of Hangyeol's knife bag once, then let it go.

"......Yes."

"And one more thing."

"Yes."

"If you do well over there, that's all your own doing."

Hangyeol nodded his head. He did not speak, because he thought he would cry if he did.

As he passed through the gate he looked back exactly once.

Daniel was still standing there.

This time, he was watching to the end.
