English

For two days the two of them hardly spoke at all.

Sujin left early in the morning and returned home late at night. Moyeon went to the hospital by herself.

Inside the house only the necessary words went back and forth. Had she eaten, had she taken her medicine, what time would she be home.

*Is this how it ends.*

That was the thought Moyeon kept coming back to.

It was only natural. Thinking of what she had done, even being allowed to stay in this house was hard to understand.

On the morning of the third day Moyeon began to pack her things. There was not much to take.

Then the front door opened.

Sujin put a document envelope onto the table as if she were throwing it.

"Take a look at this."

Moyeon opened the envelope.

> **[Taesan Holdings — Extraordinary General Meeting Agenda]**
>
> | No. | Item | Proposed by |
> |---|---|---|
> | 1 | Appointment of two outside directors | Reset Partners |
> | 2 | Special audit of overseas dealings over the last five years | Reset Partners |
> | 3 | Release of the spending records of the Strategic Planning Division | Reset Partners |

"What is this."

"I hold a 14.6 percent **stake** in Taesan. The general meeting opens in two weeks."

Moyeon's hand stopped where it was.

"...How did it come to that?"

"I bought it with Jihoon's money. The forty-eight billion won he had hidden in the Caymans — I took every bit of it."

Moyeon lifted her head.

"Is that possible?"

"I took the whole company. I did not steal the account. I replaced the head of the company that held the account."

It took Moyeon a few seconds to understand what that meant.

Then she let out a short laugh.

"...The Table-Rigging Bitch, as ever."

Sujin's eyebrows rose, just a little. It was a nickname she had not heard in five years.

"Where did you hear that."

"Five years ago. It was written on the candidate list."

"But it is not going to work."

Moyeon said it while running her eyes over the papers again.

"Why."

"Items two and three will not get the votes. The outside directors are no different."

"With 14.6 percent I can at least file a **motion**."

"Filing it works. Getting it to pass does not."

Moyeon picked up a pen. It was the first gesture in five years of someone meaning to do something.

> **[The Ownership Structure Moyeon Drew]**
>
> | Shareholder | Share | Leaning |
> |---|---|---|
> | Chairman's family | 31.2% | Defense |
> | Treasury shares and the friendly foundation | 9.8% | Defense |
> | Cross-holding among affiliates | 7.4% | Defense |
> | Reset Partners | 14.6% | Attack |
> | Institutions and foreign investors | 22.0% | Neutral |
> | Minority shareholders | 15.0% | Neutral |

"The defending side is 48.4 percent. Add even a little of the institutional block to that and it goes over half."

Sujin looked closely at the figures in the table.

"This is not in the public record, though."

"The way the **affiliate** companies inside the group hold one another's shares never appears in the public record. I saw it from the inside."

Moyeon marked one line with the pen.

"And this foundation. The name says public charity, but the office that actually runs it is the chairman's own. That, too, is something only the people inside know."

For a while Sujin said nothing at all.

This was information that money could not buy.

"Why are you telling me this."

Sujin asked.

"..."

"Because you feel sorry? Then let it go. That is not the kind of thing that can be repaid that way."

Moyeon set the pen back down.

"I am not trying to pay anything back."

"Then what."

"I want to watch that man fall too."

Moyeon's voice dropped low.

"For five years I was in a room with no window. There was no morning and no night. The person who put me in there is sitting in a meeting room right now."

Sujin looked at that face for a long time.

"I know you do not trust me."

Moyeon added.

"Of course you do not. I would not trust me either. But right now there is no one other than me who knows the inside of that place."

"..."

"Use me. You can **discard** me once I am used up."

Sujin walked over to the window. She looked outside for a long while.

*Can I trust her.*

Five years ago this person had stood beside her too. And the result was exactly what everyone already knew.

*And yet.*

Now this person had spent five years in a room with no window. That was what she had been given for selling Sujin.

And the first thing she did after coming out of that room was to draw the ownership structure that now lay on the table.

Sujin turned back from the window.

"I have one condition."

"Go ahead."

"This time you hide nothing. If you **omit** even one thing, that is the real end."

Moyeon nodded at that.

"I promise."

"Not a promise."

Sujin came closer and picked up the papers on the table.

"This time I will rig the table. You give me the information, and you move only the way I decide."

Moyeon looked up at Sujin for a moment.

Then a faint smile came over her face.

"...All right."

"This is not something to smile about."

"No, it is nothing."

Moyeon shook her head.

"It is just that this time the table is not one I rigged. That is a relief."

Sujin did not answer that. Instead she opened her laptop and sat down.

"Two weeks left. Start talking, all of it."
