English

Three in the afternoon.

Sujin stepped into the elevator, her tablet case tucked under one arm.

Her destination was the Chairman's private residence — or more precisely, the penthouse **annex** attached to it.

> **[Document for Sign-off]**

> | Item | Details |
> |---|---|
> | Document Name | New Business Investment Proposal (First Review Draft) |
> | Approver | Kang Moyeon (Managing Director, Strategic Planning Division) |
> | Location | Residence Penthouse |
> | Time | 3:00 PM |

The elevator stopped at the top floor of the building. When the doors opened, an air even quieter than that of the company lobby swept in.

*Why is it so quiet here too? Does anyone actually live here?*

The hallway was short. In its place stood one door, unusually large. The door alone looked like it cost more than Sujin could earn in half a year.

A guard gave a slight bow and opened the door for her. Sujin only tipped her head, off-hand, and stepped inside.

The living room was vast. Beyond the floor-to-ceiling windows, Seoul spread out in a single view. It looked less like somewhere a person lived than a set for a magazine shoot.

Out of habit, Sujin swept her eyes over the room.

A marble floor without a speck of dust. Cushions set at perfect angles. A sink without a single drop of water. Not one magnet, note, or photo was stuck to the refrigerator door.

*Not one thing out of place.*

In the back alleys, a home told you who lived in it just by looking. A scratch on the wall, cigarette butts piled in an ashtray, dishes left in the sink. That was the kind of thing that said how a person lived.

But this house said nothing at all.

*So this is what the very top looks like. But there's not a trace of anyone living in it.*

Sujin stood near the sofa and crossed her arms. No one had appeared yet.

"You could just leave that there."

A voice came from behind her.

Low and **languid**, with not the slightest hint of hurry.

Sujin turned around.

And her steps stopped.

*…What.*

Her breath came out one beat too late.

She wore a loose knit sweater. No makeup at all. Her hair was tied back carelessly, and one side of her collar was folded over, as if she had just gotten out of bed.

And yet Sujin could not look away.

It was not a kind of face Sujin knew. There had been pretty women in the back alleys too — faces thick with makeup, dressed well, good in photographs. But those were made faces. The kind that washed off.

This one would stay even after washing.

That morning, she had passed the group's promotional photo hanging in the lobby. That same face from the photo now stood three steps away — and, next to the real thing, the photo looked shabby.

*This face doesn't even need lighting.*

Sujin caught herself thinking it and, finding it ridiculous, let out a short laugh inside.

*Ridiculous. What are you staring so hard for.*

"I'm Lee Sujin. I'm from the Planning Department, starting today."

Sujin held out the tablet and gave a small nod. That was as far as **formality** went. She knew, even as she spoke, that her voice had come out lower than usual.

Moyeon said nothing. She simply walked to the sofa and sat down.

There was not one wasted motion in the way she sat. Smoothing her hem, crossing her legs, leaning her back against the sofa — each step flowed into the next like water. It was the body of someone who had been trained.

*Is even that something people learn?*

The mere existence of a world where such things could be learned felt foreign to Sujin.

Moyeon tapped the seat beside her with a fingertip.

"The document. Over here."

It meant: come closer.

Sujin narrowed her eyes, just for a moment.

*What, is this some kind of test?*

But there was no reason to push back over it either. She stepped around behind the sofa and settled into position, holding the tablet screen out over Moyeon's shoulder.

The moment she leaned down, the distance between them closed far more than she had expected.

Moyeon's nape lay right before Sujin's eyes.

A few loose strands had slipped out from beneath her tied-up hair. The skin underneath was almost too pale — the color of someone who had gone a long time without sunlight.

*She probably doesn't go outside much.*

The back of Sujin's own hand carried three scars — one from a cut by glass, one a burn, and the last she could not even remember getting.

With that hand, she swiped the screen forward.

Her breath brushed against Moyeon's nape. It lasted only an instant. And yet that instant felt unusually long.

*Get a grip. Just do the work.*

"This number here — is it correct?"

Moyeon asked, pointing a fingertip at a spot on the screen.

Sujin's eyes followed that fingertip.

Her fingers were long. The nails were trimmed short, and though bare of any color, they were **flawless**. There was not a single callus on any knuckle.

*This hand has probably never had to do anything.*

Sujin glanced down at her own hand. The skin under her nails was black — ink from the night before that had not come off yet.

The two hands rested on the same screen.

*…Fuck.*

Sujin pulled her hand off the screen.

"…Yes. It's correct."

Her voice cracked. It was a voice she did not like.

Moyeon turned her head slightly, and with that, the distance between them closed by another hand's width.

"What's wrong with your voice?"

"It's nothing."

Sujin answered with her eyes fixed on the screen.

She had another reason for keeping her eyes fixed there. The moment she looked away even slightly, that nape, that wrist, that folded collar — all of it would come into view.

*That wrist looks like it would break if I grabbed it once.*

The instant the thought crossed her mind, Sujin flinched at herself.

*Have I lost my mind.*

This woman was someone she had met for the first time today. She was also, in a few months, a name Sujin would have to trade for money.

*That's not something you touch.*

Sujin gritted her teeth and kept her eyes on the screen alone.

Moyeon left her signature at the bottom of the screen.

The handwriting was straight and neat. Her wrist barely moved as she drew each stroke. It was a signature written with the fingertips alone.

*I'll have to copy that later.*

Sujin studied the handwriting without thinking, then looked away, an odd aftertaste catching in her throat.

That was when she looked straight at Moyeon's face.

And only then did she notice.

Her eyes were empty.

Her features were perfect — perfect enough that lighting seemed unnecessary. But there was nothing inside them. Not boredom. Not sadness, either. Just the eyes of someone who had stopped expecting anything, for a very long time.

Sujin had seen eyes like that before.

In the back alleys, people about to be sold over a debt wore that same look — eyes that would not cry, would not run, just waited their turn.

*How is this place any different.*

In that moment, something inside her chest turned strangely cold.

"Thank you for your work today, Assistant Manager."

Moyeon said it. It was only a **courtesy**.

But something buried in the way she said it lingered in Sujin's ears long after.

Sujin gathered the tablet, gave a small bow, and turned to leave.

Right before she stepped through the door, she could not help but glance back once.

Moyeon was already looking out the window.

The vast living room, the dazzling view of the city — and the back of the woman sitting alone on the sofa looked far too small for that space.

*So she's trapped here too.*

Sujin murmured it to herself as she shut the door.

Then a short laugh slipped out of her.

*No — who am I to be worrying about anyone.*

Someone who had lived off instant noodles in a basement room and someone raised in that penthouse were never meant to be compared. Even locked up, that cage would have been at least bigger and warmer than a basement.

*Look who's taking pity on somebody.*

Having settled that in her mind, she stepped into the elevator.

But the moment the doors closed, that fingertip from earlier surfaced in her mind again.

A hand without a single callus. A wrist that had looked like it would break at a single grip.

Sujin put her hand in her pocket and made a fist.

*Don't touch it.*

She did not know why, not even to herself. But one thing was certain — the sense that if she ever touched it once, something would become impossible to undo.
