When the new business began to grind, Moyeon already knew how it would end.
> **[Expected Scenario — What Moyeon Knows]**
>
> | Item | Details |
> |---|---|
> | Actual decision | President Nam |
> | External record | A project led by Managing Director Kang Moyeon |
> | Responsibility assigned to | Kang Moyeon |
> | Precedents | 3 times (2 years ago, 4 years ago, 6 years ago) |
This was the third time.
The first time she was twenty-four. When the purchase of an affiliate fell through, Moyeon set out in the meeting room, point by point, what she had done and what she had not.
That evening the Chairman called her in.
"And what changes because you are right?"
After that she did not explain.
The second time and the third time she simply sat there. If she sat still, the whole thing was over in two hours.
*I only have to do the same this time.*
On the day of the review meeting Moyeon dressed with more care than usual. It was the kind of outfit that made it easy to keep her face blank.
"The Managing Director pushed this through from the start, so where the responsibility lies looks clear to me."
It was the sentence she had expected.
"Managing Director, do you have anything to say?"
"...I do not."
Moyeon answered with her hands resting on her knees.
*Just two hours.*
Then the door opened.
Moyeon raised her head.
Lee Sujin was standing there.
*...Why is she here?*
She was an assistant manager in the Planning Department. That rank could not get her into this room.
"What is this?"
The Team Lead stood up, thrown off.
"Lee Sujin, Assistant Manager, Planning Department. I have one document for you."
Lee Sujin laid the papers on the table.
"This is an account of how the decision was made. I have attached copies of the originals."
Moyeon's eyes went down to the papers.
There was one table. Four lines, arranged by date.
She took it in at a glance.
*She sat up all night on this.*
Moyeon recognized it for what it was.
Digging through every set of **minutes**, every approval form, every email, laying them out in order of time, and attaching copies of the originals. That is not a job of a day or two.
*She has been staying late every night lately.*
So that was what it had been.
President Nam turned one page. On the second his hand stopped.
"...Who told you to do this?"
"No one did."
"Then why?"
"If the facts go down wrong in the record, an **audit** later, when someone comes to check the books, will put the company in a worse place."
Moyeon listened to that answer and laughed briefly to herself.
*A lie.*
A person who worries about the company being in a worse place does not walk into an executive meeting as an assistant manager.
That was a line chosen because it works in a meeting room.
*Then what is the real reason?*
Moyeon thought she knew the answer to that question. And she did not want to have it confirmed.
The Chairman took the papers from him.
For a long moment no one spoke.
"...President Nam."
"Yes, Chairman."
"Is this your sign-off?"
"That was, the situation was urgent..."
"We will stop here for today."
On the way out of the meeting room, Moyeon noticed that her hands were shaking.
*Why am I shaking?*
It was a thing that ended if she sat for two hours. It was a thing that would have passed, the way it always had.
But someone had opened the door and come in.
In twenty-one years it was the first time.
Since she came into this house, not one person had spoken for her. Not the real children, not the secretariat, not the people at the company. Everyone thought that was how it should be, and Moyeon had lived thinking so too.
*But why her, of all people?*
Moyeon put a hand against the corridor wall for a moment.
Of all people, she was the one Moyeon would send to prison in eight months.
Three days later a document came up from the HR team.
> **[Personnel Action Notice — Copy]**
>
> | Item | Details |
> |---|---|
> | Subject | Assistant Manager Lee Sujin |
> | Grounds | Attending a meeting above her rank without leave; gathering internal papers without leave |
> | Action | Submit a written explanation; reflected in the performance review |
Moyeon looked at that paper for a long time.
*A written explanation.*
It was an explanation Lee Sujin was writing because of her.
One phone call could have made it go away. All it took was for a managing director to tell HR, "I asked for that document," and it was finished.
Moyeon picked up the receiver.
And she put it down again.
*I must not.*
The moment she made that call, she would become someone willing to **shield** her, to stand in front of her and take what came. Then the talk would spread in the company, Jihoon would hear it, and the plan would shake.
Above all —
*I am not allowed to grow attached.*
This was a person she would sell in eight months. A person she would send to prison.
If she saved her now, her hand would shake later when the time came to sell her.
Moyeon put the notice in a drawer and closed it.
Even after closing it she could not take her hand off the drawer for a long while.
"There were adoption papers in there."
It was a word Sujin threw out without thinking.
In that moment Moyeon nearly dropped the glass in her hand.
"Where are they now? I have never once seen them."
The voice came out on its own. There was no room to control it.
*Calm down.*
Moyeon pulled herself together at once. Showing feeling like this was dangerous. It meant handing the other person a weak point.
Even so, she could not stop her steps toward the records room.
> **[Records Room Guide]**

> | Entry | Tag your employee badge, then a keeper goes with you |
> | Photographs and removal | Approval needed in advance |
> | In charge | General Affairs |
In twenty-one years, since she was eight, there had not been one chance to see those papers.
When the file came out of the box, Moyeon's hand stopped on the cover.
A strange name was written next to her own. A name no one calls now.
*So this was me.*
For a long time she could not turn the page.
"May I open it?"
A careful voice came from beside her. Moyeon gave a short nod.
One faded photograph came out. A small child standing awkwardly, and adults in formal suits.
In that moment something in Moyeon's head gave way.
"This is me. When I first came here."
The words came out on their own.
*Do not.*
A warning went off in her head. This was not a thing to talk about. It was information that could become a weak point and be used later. In twenty-one years she had never once let it out of her mouth.
But her mouth would not stop.
"I can still feel my mother's hand letting go. In front of the car, she kept telling me not to look back. But I kept looking back, because I could see her crying."
*Stop.*
"And from the moment I crossed the gate of this house, no one held me. They told me to smile only when a photograph was being taken."
Moyeon was surprised at herself.
This was not acting. It was not a story pulled out on purpose to work on the **instinct** to protect. It was only that for the first time someone was sitting beside her, looking at those papers with her.
"After I grew up, I looked for my mother in secret. It took a lot of asking around."
"...Did you meet her?"
"No."
Her voice shook.
"She had died a few years before. Cancer, they said. Without me knowing, without me there."
No one in the world knew this story. Not the Chairman, not her brother, not the secretariat. She had looked into it alone, confirmed it alone, and swallowed it alone.
And now she was telling it in front of the person she would send to prison in eight months.
"I could not even go to the funeral. Back then I did not know there was such a thing."
No word came from beside her.
No comfort, no **pity**, nothing like "But you live in a good place now."
Instead one hand came to rest on her shoulder.
*...What is this?*
Moyeon did not push the hand away. She knew she had to, and she could not do it.

> | Use of this person | Preparing the papers and taking the responsibility |
> | What I just did | Told a story I have told no one |
> | Judgment | A mistake |
*This is a mistake.*
Moyeon tried to file it away like that. Once feeling gets in, the table falls. It was the surest rule she had learned in twenty-one years.
And still the warmth of the hand on her shoulder kept pulling at her attention.
"...I have never heard anything like this before."
A low voice came from beside her.
"There has been no one to tell, all this time."
"There is now."
It sounded like something said without thinking. The other woman had probably meant nothing by it.
And yet at that one line Moyeon's breath caught.
She raised her head. In the dark their eyes met.
*This person is making the papers that will sell me.*
*And I am going to send her to prison.*
*So why.*
Moyeon looked away. But the hand on her shoulder she still could not push off.
