English

The word left his lips — "Om" — and something happened that he could not have made happen.

*Om.* The perfect word. The oldest word. It meant *the wholeness of all things; the truth behind the world.* He had spoken it a thousand times as a boy, without feeling it. Now, in his ruin, it reached him.

It was not magic. He did not need it to be. In the moment he heard himself say it, he remembered — remembered what he had let himself forget through all those years in the city. He remembered that life was holy. He remembered that he was more than this tired, hateful self bent over the water. Deep inside him, under all the wine and dice and shame, the eternal was still there — quiet, and unbroken. It had never left. He had only stopped listening.

The madness went out of him. He no longer wanted to die. He drew back from the edge of the river, trembling, and a great wave of tiredness rolled over him — but a good tiredness now, clean and warm.

He lay down among the roots of a tree, put his head on his arm, and fell into a deep, dreamless sleep. He slept like a man who had been sick for years and was finally, truly resting. He slept as if he might sleep away everything old and wake as someone new.

And that is nearly what happened. When Siddhartha finally opened his eyes, the light had changed, and he felt as though a long time had passed. He felt calm, and clear, and strangely young — washed clean, and new.

Then he saw that he was not alone. A monk in a yellow robe sat quietly beside him, watching over him. And though Siddhartha could not yet say from where, the face was familiar.
