English

Rine opened the letter again that night.

> *The coming-of-age ceremony is in the third week of October. The workshop receives its cloth eight weeks before that.
> So the dye must arrive eight weeks before as well.
> Today is the twenty-first of August.*

"Uncle. This is strange."

Bern brought the lamp over.

"When did Uncle Hanan write this letter?"

"Seid to here is four days. He must have written it on the twentieth or twenty-first of August."

"Had the eight-week mark not passed yet, then?"

"The third week of August starts on the fifteenth. By the twentieth, it had already passed."

Rine set the letter on the table.

"So he wrote that it was late only after it was already late. Then he took four days to send it."

"...That is so."

"No one spends four days just to tell you something is late."

Rine held the letter close to the lamp.

"This isn't a letter that tells. It's a letter that asks."

"Asks what."

"Whether I know why this year was late."

The next morning, she went to the Doryun Company loading yard.

Not a single cart was there. Two **porters** were sweeping the ground.

Cassian stood in front of the tag board. More than half the tags were missing.

"No carts."

"They're all out."

"Where to?"

"Seid."

Rine stopped walking.

"When?"

"Early August."

"What did they load?"

Cassian's hand stopped halfway through hanging a tag.

"...Why do you ask."

"You told the clerk something last time. That the Seid carts couldn't go out this week. And you told him to send them anyway."

"Did I."

"You said the price would drop next week."

Cassian finished hanging the tag.

"Dye."

Rine stayed where she was.

"Indigo?"

"Northern stuff."

"How many geun?"

"Not telling."

"Just how much you bought."

"Not telling that either."

Rine took her hand out of her pocket.

"Uncle. How did you know our house was doing something with the Seid Cloth Guild?"

Cassian looked straight at Rine for the first time.

"You told me."

"...I did?"

"Two sheets for the guarantee for reinstatement. Our company wrote one, so I saw the other one too," Cassian said. "The guarantor is the Seid Cloth Guild. Hanan Bek signed it."

"That's a guarantee."

"Nobody signs a guarantee for just anyone. Someone from Seid put four thousand two hundred gwan on some kid from Rahel. That means the kid has got something worth money in Seid."

Rine didn't answer.

"My brother took two hours to read it. That evening he sent ten carts to Seid."

"You're not saying sorry to me."

"Why would I be sorry."

"..."

"You put it in writing. Put it in writing, and it gets read as writing." Cassian took his hand off the tag board. "You're the one who wanted it that way."

Rine nodded.

"That's right."

"..."

"I'm the one who wanted it that way."

Cassian started to say something else, then stopped.

Rine turned to go. Bern was standing one step inside the loading yard door.

As she went out the door, a voice came from behind her.

"Hey."

Rine looked back.

"It's the northern stuff you're buying, right?"

Cassian asked. He still had the tag in his hand.

Rine looked at him for a moment.

"I won't tell you."

Back at the warehouse, Rine set down the counting board.

"I'm going to Seid."

"Miss."

"Uncle Hanan asked why this year was late. I know now. Doryun Company sent ten carts out in early August."

"You could answer that in a letter."

"A letter takes four days. If a reply comes back, that's eight." Rine folded down a finger. "Eight days out of ninety-seven."

Sera pushed the abacus.

"There is a travel cost. Two wagons, three people, eight days round trip. Forty gwan. Forty gwan."

"If I spend forty out of six hundred nine, five hundred sixty-nine is left."

"It is left."

Bern opened the rulebook.

"There is one thing to check. The Doryun Company addendum. Trade during the guarantee period must go through Doryun Company."

"Even going to Seid?"

"Going is not trade. Buying or selling is trade."

Rine looked up.

"So going to look is fine, then."

"It is fine. But you cannot buy anything there."

"I know."

They set out at dawn on the twenty-seventh of August.

Two wagons. Rine and Bern drove the lead wagon, Yona the one behind. Sera and Martin stayed at the warehouse.

Before they left, Sera handed over a sheet of paper.

"The ledger. One hundred six of one hundred nineteen columns filled. The remaining thirteen are Seid's."

"Seid's?"

"The fourth quarter, three years ago. The buying source is all listed as Seid, but there is no trading house name."

Rine folded it and put it in her pocket.

They traveled four days.

On the evening of the third day, the road split. The left went up into the mountains, the right followed the river.

Bern turned the **reins** to the right.

"How many times have you been on this road?"

"...A dozen or so times."

"With Father?"

"With the master."

Rine looked ahead.

"I've never been, though."

"You were young, Miss."

"Not even once, until I was thirteen?"

Bern adjusted his grip on the reins.

Seid had no city wall.

Two stone pillars stood on either side of the road, with a wooden guard **post** between them. That was the border.

A man came out of the post. His uniform was different from Rahel's.

"What house is this."

"Haran Trading House." Rine held out the **certificate**.

The man took it and looked it over, turning it once each way.

"This is Rahel's."

"Yes."

"It does not work here."

Rine took the certificate back.

"Then what does?"

"Being on the Seid merchant registry is enough. If you are not on it, enter as a guest. Guests cannot buy or sell."

"We're not here to buy or sell."

"Then you may come in."

Rine looked at the wooden post beside the guard station. A thick book was chained to it, the same way as the one at the Rahel registry.

"What is that?"

"The merchant registry."

"May I look?"

"Anyone may look."

Rine stood in front of the book.

It was thick. The names were not in **alphabetical** order but in the order of registration.

Bern turned the pages beside her. His hand knew the way.

"Uncle. Is our name in there?"

"..."

"Uncle."

Bern's hand stopped.

Rine looked at the line.

> | Registration number | S-0417 |
> | House | Haran Trading House |
> | Representative | Marco Haran |
> | Registered | **2 March, 11 years ago** |
> | Last renewed | March, 4 years ago |

Rine read the registration date twice.

"Eleven years ago?"

"...That is so."

"I was two."

Bern did not answer.

Rine touched the line with her nail.

"Uncle. You said Seid is four days by wagon. Once every twenty times, that's an eight-day round trip."

"That is so."

"How many times did Father come here in eleven years?"

Bern did not close the registry. He left it open and stepped back.
