English

She was setting a box down at Doryun Company's inner stall.

The crowd was thick. People passed in front of the stall, and calls rose from the stall next door.

A union messenger came carrying a leather document case.

"Haran Trading House."

"That's me."

The messenger took a paper from the case. The wax seal was still unbroken.

Rine set down the box she was holding, all the way. Only then did she take the paper.

> **NOTICE OF DOCUMENT RE-EXAMINATION**
> *Sent: 26 July*
>
> | Item | Content |
> |---|---|
> | Subject | All documents submitted by Haran Trading House |
> | Reason | Filed papers include a document signed after the date of death |
> | Action | Certification suspended until re-examination ends · **reinstatement review on hold** |
> | Documents involved | Stall Certification Application — Item List · attached Deposit Receipt · **21 July lamp oil case, 109 gwan** |
> | Expected end date | **Not set** |

Rine read down the documents-involved line. She looked for the oil case first.

"Uncle. Why is the oil in here? I sold all of it and filed the report."

"The oil is not a violation. The shop you bought from has no registration, so the union simply cannot check the source. A paper which cannot be checked gets bound into whatever inquiry is already open."

"So it is not that I did something wrong. It is that it cannot be **confirmed**."

"That is so."

"But the result stops all the same."

"...That is so."

Rine looked at the expected-end-date field.

"It does not even say when this ends."

The person at the next stall was watching this way.

Cassian came to pull the wooden tag from the stall.

"I heard about the certification **suspension**."

"Seven days are left."

"Not seven — none. Once certification is suspended, you cannot sell a single day in this spot. Seven days you cannot sell are not days left."

"Only three of the ten days are used."

"The terms were a thousand gwan in ten days. If you cannot sell even one day, it is the same whether all ten **remain** or not."

"If you would just wait—"

"No."

"You let it go before."

"What did you say before." Cassian looked at the tag in his hand. "You said it was yours, so you set the price."

"..."

"Then you took the terms too. If I let this go, that line disappears with it."

"What about the stall rent?"

"You did not borrow it. You paid rent. Rent paid is not returned. You were the one who wanted it that way."

Cassian ran his palm once over the spot where the tag had been. Then he smiled.

In the warehouse, Sera was squaring the ledger.

The abacus beads clicked. Wax had hardened on the candlestick.

Rine sat down beside her.

"Sera. You asked about the source field twice. I was the one who let it through. That is why everything has stopped now."

Sera did not lift her hand from the abacus.

"I only watch my own column."

"Aren't you angry?"

"If I get angry, the numbers come out wrong."

Rine leaned toward the ledger. She counted the column Sera was counting, along with her. She sat not on the side that decides, but the side that checks.

After a long while, Sera's hand stopped.

"I have something to ask. Those boxes — if they are not ours, whose are they?"

Rine looked at Bern.

"The deposit receipt has no depositor listed."

"So you do not know either, Uncle?"

"I do not know," Bern said. "Everything I know is written down somewhere. That field is empty, so I have no way to know."

Sera counted the next column.

Martin stood at the back of the warehouse. A broken piece of chalk lay under the whitewashed wall.

"Uncle. Whose are those boxes?"

"..."

"This is the third time I have asked."

"That was not me."

"I know it was not you. I am asking who it was."

Martin turned toward the wall.

"There is a condition. Do not bring up my debt."

"You have a debt, Uncle?"

"I am telling you not to bring that up."

"...All right."

Martin picked up the chalk. He wrote a name on the wall. He did not say it aloud.

Rine read it. She read it twice.

Martin rubbed the wall with his palm. Only a white smear was left on the whitewash.

Yona spoke from beside the boxes.

"Those boxes — four hundred fifty gwan each. Half a year of our wages."

No one answered.

Martin walked out to the front of the warehouse. From that day, he did not come to the back again.

Several days passed.

They sat by the river. A cart passed over the wooden bridge.

Bern took off his coat and spread it over a stone. Rine sat down on it.

"Uncle. Of the ninety days, how many are left?"

"Seventy-four."

"But those are days I cannot use."

"The reinstatement review will not open until the re-examination ends."

"How long does a re-examination usually take?"

"The **expected** end date came back not set."

"Not the not-set answer. From what you have seen."

"...I have seen two cases. One was twenty-seven days, one was thirty-three. About a month."

"Then seventy-four minus thirty is forty-four. Forty-four days are all I can actually use."

Rine took a paper from her pocket. It was the notice of loss of standing. The back was blank.

With a stub of pencil, she wrote a number on the back.

44.

It was the only paper she had to write on.

A label came out of her pocket along with it. Rine put it back in.

It was the fifteenth day.

"Shall I go instead? All that is needed is to bring back the result."

"I will go."

Bern said no more.

The registry window was a wooden grille. There was no glass.

"I have come to see the result of the **temporary** guardian assignment. For Haran Trading House."

The clerk took out an official form and slid it under the grille.

"The assignee field is empty. Who was decided on?"

"It is on hold."

"What does on hold mean?"

"It means no one has been decided on yet."

"When will it be decided?"

"That is not decided here."

"Then where is it decided?"

"That is not decided here either."

Rine looked at the form again. There was no field printed at all for the date she could reapply.

"Let me get this straight. No one has been decided on to sign in my place. When that will be decided is not decided either. And the date I can reapply is not written here at all."

"That is so."

"Then what can I do right now?"

The clerk looked toward the next person.

"Nothing."

Rine pressed her fingernail to the assignee field. There was no letter to trace.

Only a fingernail mark was left on the paper.
