English
On the fourth day after the lid was put on the coffin, the lawyer cut the wax seal.
Red flakes fell on the table. He unfolded the paper and tilted it toward the candlestick. The room had one window, so a candle had to be lit even at noon.
Rine Haran sat in her father's chair. Her feet did not reach the floor. Bern, her father's old assistant, stood beside her.
"Under the late Marco Haran's will, all **assets** of the Haran Trading House pass to his only daughter, Rine Haran."
The lawyer read the list aloud.
> **INHERITED ASSETS — HARAN TRADING HOUSE**
> *Prepared: 12 July · Roben Law Office*
>
> | Item | Count | Condition |
> |---|---|---|
> | Warehouse | 1 | West dock |
> | Wagons | 4 | 2 need repair |
> | Workers | 9 | Contracts valid |
> | Stock | See attachment | Not confirmed |
> | Cash | None | — |
"The stock row just says see attachment," Rine said. "Where is the attachment?"
"There is none."
"None?"
"The master did not update the stock list in his last three months."
Rine looked at the list again. The cash row was empty.
She thought she now knew why her father had burned three candles every night for half a year.
"So what I inherit is one warehouse and four wagons."
"And nine people," Bern said. "Six have already packed their things."
"Three stayed?"
"Three stayed."
Rine nodded. It was little for a girl of thirteen to inherit, but it was better than nothing.
"Uncle Bern."
"Yes."
"What is in our warehouse?"
Bern opened his mouth and shut it.
"...I do not know."
The door burst open.
The hinges tore loose, and it fell inward. Dust rose.
A man walked in. He took off neither his coat nor his hat.
"Joshua Rendal." Bern's voice dropped. "There has been a death in this house."
"I knew that."
Rendal threw a paper on the table.
> **COLLATERAL AGREEMENT**
>
> Debtor: Marco Haran (Haran Trading House)
> Creditor: Joshua Rendal (Rendal Company)
> Amount: 4,200 silver gwan
> Collateral: All assets of the Haran Trading House (warehouse, wagons, stock)
> Repayment date: 30 July
> Drawn up: *12 July*
> Signature: *Marco Haran*
"Your father put the whole house up as collateral two months ago," Rendal said. "The deadline is near. If it is not paid, this place is mine."
Rine pulled the paper toward her. Her hand shook, so she held it with both hands.
The signature was in her father's handwriting. She was sure of that.
"Uncle Bern, is this real?"
"The handwriting is the master's," Bern said, taking the paper. "But miss, Mr. Rendal. Should there not be one more paper?"
"What?"
"The loan note. If money was borrowed, the note comes first and the collateral agreement comes after."
Rendal stopped for a moment. Then he drew another paper from his inside pocket. There was no fold in it. It was the paper of a man who knew he would need it.
> **LOAN NOTE**
>
> Borrower: Marco Haran
> Lender: Joshua Rendal
> Amount: 4,200 silver gwan
> Date lent: 8 May
> Repayment date: 30 July
> Union stamp: *No. 5-114 (9 May)*
> Signature: *Marco Haran*
"Satisfied?"
"This one has a union stamp on it," Rine said. "The other one does not."
Rendal did not answer. He tapped the edge of the table twice with one finger.
"Uncle Bern. What is the difference between the two papers?"
"The loan note is proof that money is owed by the **debtor**. The **collateral** agreement sets out what the lender takes if the debt is not paid."
"So what if there is no collateral agreement?"
"The debt remains, but he cannot take the trading house."
Rine spread the collateral agreement on the table.
"When did you say this was drawn up?"
"Two months ago."
"That is not the date here." Rine set a fingernail on the line. "The twelfth of July. My father died on the ninth."
The room went quiet.
"Uncle Bern, what is a union stamp?"
"A large contract is not **valid** until the traders' union stamps it. The union also checks that the signer was alive that day."
"Then this one cannot get one."
"It cannot. And—" Bern looked at Rendal. "A signature after the day of death is **forgery**. Report it to the union and his company's license will be suspended."
Rendal put a hand on the edge of his hat. He did not straighten it.
"Will you report it?"
Rendal asked. His voice dropped a little.
Rine did not answer. She looked at the loan note again. Repayment, the thirtieth of July. Eighteen days.
"Uncle Bern. Can I sell goods and pay it?"
"...You cannot use the trading seal until you are fifteen."
"Without the trading seal I cannot trade?"
"You can. But a contract needs a guardian's signature. And you have no guardian."
"Because my father was the guardian."
"That is so."
Rine put the loan note down.
"If I report it, his company's license will be suspended?"
"It would be."
"Then what about my debt?"
"...It stays."
"And I must find four thousand two hundred gwan within eighteen days."
"That is right."
Rine lifted her head.
"I will not report it. But I have a condition."
Rendal laughed. This time it was short. He glanced at the broken door, stood it up, and leaned it against the wall. It was not what the man who broke it would do.
"I will go first. Four days. In that time you close one deal. One is enough."
"And if I do?"
"I will extend the deadline."
"How long?"
"...Three months."
"Six months."
Rendal looked at Rine. He looked for a long time.
"Four months. I cannot go past that either."
"Why?"
"Because I have someone to pay too." Rendal straightened his hat. "Four days. If you fail, I will not come with papers. I will come with men."
